Jerusalem Hospital Combines Modern Medicine, Halakha JERUSALEM — Soon there will be a new $10,000,000 Shaare Zedek Hospital here, but the traditional Orthodox law (Halakha) that goes back centuries will continue to be observed. The cornerstone-laying ceremony for the hospital was held last week, and it will rise in the Talbien sec- tion of Jerusalem. The present Shaare Zedek structure, 62 years old, is on the road into the city. Sixty-two years ago, Jerusalem was more like a village than the modern city it is today. It was the site of the 1917 sur- render of the Turks to Field Mar- shal Viscount Allenby of Britain, and in 1948 treated casualties of the War for Independence. It has epidemics of malaria, diptheria and polio. Through it all, however, the city's oldest — and most over- crowded—hospital has combined religious observance with mod- em m e d i c i n e, according to James Feron in The New York Times. Dr. Falk Schlesinger, director of the hospital, pointed out to Feron that Arab medical students are em- ployed to operate switchboards, elevators . and ..ambulances on Saturday, when Orthodox Jews may not work. Nurses, who cannot write on the Sabbath, record patients' tempera- tures by moving paper clips on printed charts. When a death occurs, a sign, "Az'hara Cohanim, Caution, Co- hanim," is placed on the front door. It is directed at the Cohanim, descendants of Aaron, who are not permitted to be in a building con- taining a corpse. So observant is the hospital Tel Aviv Dean Decides to Keep Job in Hassle TEL AVIV (JTA) — Prof. Andre De Vries, one of several key Tel Aviv University faculty leaders who resigned along with Dr. George Wise, the university presi- dent, withdrew his resignation and decided to continue as Dean of the university's medical school af- ter it was decided to introduce first-year medical studies by this October. The approval for this step was given by Rector Benzion Katz, who appeared before the medical school council. Differences with Rector Katz was the reason given by Dr. Wise for his resignation. Previously, Dr. Katz had indicated he favored postponement for an- other year of the introduction of first-year medical courses. MEW that even the ultra-Orthodox Naturei Karta accept treatment there. Nevertheless, according to Dr. Schlesinger, "we don't treat them according to religion first. I can't take into consideration that the Almighty will come through with- out our help." Operations take place on the Sabbath when necessary," he said, adding that "It may not be right to work, but it is also a mitzvah— a good deed—to save a soul." JDC to Aid 400,000 in 1966; $7 Million to Be Spent in Israel TEL AVIV (JTA) — The Joint Distribution Committee will assist more than 400,000 needy Jews throughout the world in 1966, Charles H. Jordan, JDC director general, reported here. He said that the beneficiaries would in- clude 97,000 Israelis. Jordan made his report at the end of a 10-day visit, during which he conferred with President Sha- zar, Premier Eshkol, ministers and government officials and com- munity leaders. He declared that the JDC budget for 1966 would amount to $22,000,000 to be used for vari- ous aid programs in 30 coun- tries. He said S7,000,000 would be spent in Israel, mainly for the Malben program for aged, handicapped and sick immi- grants. The rest, he reported, would be used for yeshivot and ORT training schools. In 1965, he stated, the JDC aid- ed more than 413,000 Jews throughout the world, including Israelis, European Jews and North African and Middle Eastern Jews. He said the loss of $7,500,000 in West German reparations, due to the completion of that program, cast a shadow on all JDC opera- tions. The JDC had to curtail opera- tions for that reason in almost all countries, he reported, adding that greater fund-raising efforts would be needed to find new sources of income. The annual convention of the Zionist Federation of Australia and New Zealand held on Jan. 29, in Sydney, elected NATHAN JACOB- SON and ROBERT ZABLUD, General Zionist leaders of this city, to the highest offices of the Feder- ation. Jacobson was chosen presi- dent and Zablud head of the de- partment of public affairs. JULIAN MERCER, another General Zionist leader, was elected vice-president of the federation. Ghana to Extradite Nazi Doctor to Bonn The Six Million .. and Nazi Distortions BONN (JTA) — Dr. Horst Schu- mann, charged in West Germany with the murder of Jews in Ausch- witz concentration camp, will be extradited by the new Ghanian regime, the West German Ambas- sador to Ghana reported to the Bonn government. Former Premier Nkrumah had refused to extradite the Nazi. Dr. Schumann, about. 60, works for Ghana's Ministry of Health at Keterkrachi, 200 miles north of Accra. He is charged with sterili- zation and experiments of living humans, totaling thousands — all Jews. Zarchin Desalting Process Won't Work on Big Scale JERUSALEM (ZINS) — Gen. Zvi Tsur, former chief of the gen- eral staff and now director of the Mekorot Water Co., told journal- ists that the Zarchin desalination project is not adaptable to Israel tsince the country needs much more water than the Zarchin pro- ject is capable of producing. For this reason, Tsur said, the pro- ject was frozen. The largest in- stallation of the Zarchin company in Eilat is now producing 250 cubic meters of water every 24 hours. "This may be adequate for the requirements of a hotel or a factory but is far from sufficient to meet the country's need esti- mated at 100,000,000 cubic meters of water." An American Nazi, who was quoted in an interview in Ben- ton Harbor, by a Free Press writer, resorted to typical current neo- Nazi propaganda by ridiculing the figure of 6,000,000—referring to the wholesale slaughter of Jews by the Nazis. In that article, the Nazi was described as having "a brilliant but twisted mind." (Where did we hear that before?). To prove his point, the Benton Harbor Nazi told the F. P. re- porter that the American Jewish Year Books for 1939 and 1945 gave the figures for world Jewish population respectively as 12,000,- 000 and 15,000,000. How then, could six million have been murdered by the Nazis? Here are the true facts: The American Jewish Year Book, published jointly by the Jewish Publication Society of America and the American Jewish Committee, gave the world Jewish population figure in the 1939 Year Book as 16,180,000. The 1945 Year Book figure for the world Jewish population was 11,500,000. A front page article in The Jewish News of Jan. 7, 1966, gave the global Jewish population as 13,887,000.
