(An Editorial in the New York
Times, Feb. 26).
Of all the symbols to use in the
projected national shrine at Ellis
Island, a wall would seem to be
the least appropriate. Walls are
built to exclude, as Berlin's Wall
of Shame reminds us. Ellis Island
was America's gateway for six
decades; erecting "The Wall of
the Sixteen Million" is a poor way
to convey that idea, even if mil-
lions of names are inscribed on
the monument. To be sure, the
design looks more like a rheostat
cast in concrete than a wall. We
think both the design and the con-
cept could stand reconsideration.

CLASSIFIED ADVERTISEMENTS
NEW YORK (JTA)—Film critics
hailed the opening at the Cameo
Theater here of "The Last Chap-
ter," a documentary film on the
life and culture of Polish Jewry
during the 1,000 years of its exist-
ence, which was culminated by the
Nazi mass murders of the Second
World War.
Sponsored by the American
Jewish Congress, the film, pro-
duced and directed by Benjamin
and Lawrence Rothman, and
written by S. L. Schneiderman,
depicts the history of Polish
Jewry from the Middle Ages
and the Renaissance through the
20th Century and the Nazi holo-
caust.
The material includes old pic-
tures of statues, paintings and
tapestries as well as films of hos-
pitals, schools, synagogues, mar-
kets and homes along with scenes
of people at work and play.
Also vividly described are the
contributions of Jewish scientists,
teachers, artists and writers in-
cluding Sholem Aleichem, I. L.
Peretz and Marc Chagall.
