`Principle of Thing'
Wins Case for UJA
The United Jewish Appeal is
$600 richer, thanks to two men
who had their day in court.
Detroit attorney Glenn Gross-
man described to The Jewish
News the amusing proceedings
in Common Pleas Judge Ben-
jamin Stanczyk's courtroom last
week.
The plaintiffs in the case, two
businessmen who had dealt
amicably with each other for
years, had come to a stalemate
on a $280 shipment which one
insisted he had sent out, the
other insisted he hadn't receiv-
ed. They agreed it wasn't the
money they cared about, it was
the principle of the thing. But
principle meant enough to start
calling each other names.
At Judge Stanczyk's sugges-
tion, they agreed to settle by
giving a like amount to charity.
Thus, both would win.
The verdict was: 8300 apiece
to the United Jewish Appeal.
Not to be outdone by his com-
petitor however, one plaintiff
threw in an extra $100 for the
Jewish Hospital at Denver.
