Tell Me Why

•By ELAINE EIZELMAN

Somebody tell me, what is war?
Is it-just - fighting in a land next door?
It's fighting for what's just and right,.
It's. men fighting with all their- might.
Please say it's not here to stay,
Please say the men will stop melting
away..
I just want the war to end,
So all lands could be our friends.

The accent will be on youth at

Maybe someday my prayers will come
true,
And we'll be able to say that the war
is through.
True, the people there are in need,
But our men still have families to
feed.
As they follow a blazing hot trail,
Not knowing what's on the other side,
Looking out, only to see,
A land of some kind, spread out wide.

Car-Making Hazards
Told in 'Safety Last'

Jeffrey O'Connell and Arthur
Myers are the authors of "Safety
Last—An Indictment of the Auto
Industry," published by Random
House.
The two authors maintain that
the automobile manufactur-
ers could change designs to as-
sure safety. They charge that by
naming cars "Wildcat," "Fury,"
"Marauder," and similar names,
the car makers emphasize reckless-
ness, blaming carelessness in driv-
ing on traffic tolls, whereas they
insist that changes in manufactur-
ing and the building of safer cars
could change the picture.
With 50,000 killed yearly in traf-
fic accidents and millions injured,
and the prospect of the toll being
doubled in 10 years, McConnell
and Myers appeal for changes that
could solve the problem and
eliminate the "safety last" threat.

will be sung in oratorio style by
a 50-voice mixed chorus.
The synagogue's Cantor Simon
Bermanis will conduct. A string
orchestra and pianist Rose Mash
will provide accompaniment.
Annie Kavafian, born in Istan-
bul, Turkey, 17 years ago, has
been awarded the outstanding mu-
sician scholarship at the National
Music Camp, Interlochen, every
year since 1961 .
A student of Mischa Mischakoff,
she performed with the Center
Symphony as a result of her win-
ning the Center's violin competi-
tion.
Clark Feldman has also attended
the Interlochen music camp for the
past five summers. At the Nation-
al Music Camp, he won the con-
certo competition for violinists in
his division and captured the hon-
or of the Michigan Federation of
Music Clubs' annual scholarship.
A student of Mischa Mischakoff,
Clark is currently concertmaster
of the Cass Technical High School
Orchestra. He is also a member
of the Ahavas Achim Cantor's
Club.
Michael Ouzounian is pursuing
his viola studies with Nathan
Gordon. At Cass Tech, Michael
holds the principal violist chair
in the school's orchestra. lie is
also a member of the Zerounian
Quartet and the Cass Tech String
Quartet. Michael has appeared
twice as soloist with the Nation- -
al Music Camp Orchestra.
David Budson studies cello with
Thaddeus Markiewicz and holds
the principal cello chair in the
Cass Tech Orchestra. David will
solo with the orchestra in their
May 13 concert.
Norman Letvin is a student of
Vincent Melidon, clarinetist of the
Detroit Symphony. Norman was a
featured soloist with the Cass
Symphonic Band at the National
Band Directors' Conference in Chi-
cago last December. He has also
been a soloist with the Interlochen
Orchestra on three occasions.
Pianist David Syme has appear-
ed a soloist with the Cass Sym-
phony. He is a student of Julius
Chajes and a senior at Mumford
High School.
The teens who perform chamber
music have not yet chosen a name
for their ensemble. If you can
think of a good one, write to Can-
tor Simon Bermanis, Cong. Aha-
vas Achim, 19190 Schaefer.
