40 Tombstones Wrecked in Munich; Police Say Revelers, but Jews Disagree Miss Spark Wins
MUNICH (JTA) — Vandals up-
rooted and damaged about 40
tombstones in the 150-year-old
Jewish Cemetery in Munich last
weekend, and police said that the
desecrations were committed by
drunken revelers at the height of
the curent Fasching (carnival) sea-
son.
However, Dr. Hendrick Van
Dam, general secretary Of the Cen-
tral Council of Jews in Germany,
changed Monday that the vandal-
ism had obviously been done with
"calculated malice."
He added that the crime was
"not to be wondered at" in view
of the anti-Semitic headlines con-
stantly on display in the right-
wing newspapers widely displayed
on West German newstands.
A special Munich police com-
mission began a search for the
vandals, who were believed to be
18 to 20 years old. A reward of
3,000 marks ($750) has been of-
fered for their apprehension.
Munich Mayor Hans Jochem Vogel
visited the cemetery Sunday and
expressed his condolences, to
Munich's Jewish community. The
city government debated whether
to publicize the desecration and
finally allowed photographers and
newsmen to enter the vandalized
cemetery Sunday.
Another Jewish cemetery dese-
cration was reported in a German
city Tuesday as officials in Munich
announced the arrest of a suspect
in the desecration of the 40 tomb-
stones. The suspect was identified
as Christoph Seller, a laborer. The
new incident took place in Mun-
cheon-Gladbach Monday. Four
gravestones were toppled. Police
said it was the work of children.

Assures Jews of Amity
MONTREAL (JTA) — The ef-
forts of French-speaking Canadi-
ans in Quebec to achieve "their
rightful place" poses no threat to
Jews and other minority groups in
the province. Premier Jean Lesage
told the 39th Fellowship Dinner in
Temple Emanu-El Synagogue
here. The premier was presented
with a Brotherhood Award of
Brotherhood of Merit.
The premier called on all ethnic
groups in the province to support
their French-speaking fellow citi-
zens, as he explained that French-
Canadians were becoming less in-
tolerant on religious and racial
lines as they built an improved so-
ciety and their self-confidence in-
creased. A number of neo-Fascists
have been active in Quebec in re-
cent years.
He said that "a few isolated
extremist demonstrations, or a
number of remarks taken out of
context" have "the appearance
of threats." He assured his audi-
ence of Catholics, Jews and
Protestants, however, that the
movement "is not directed
against anyone and will never
be as long as I am leader of the
government in power" and has
"no racial overtones whatever."
The premier, who visited Israel
last summer, compared the
changes with those of Israel, as-
serting that in Israel, as in Que-
bec, "the people are working to
achieve balance and are gradually
laying the social and economic
framework for a community in
full expansion." He was honored
by Temple Emanu-El for his "dis-
tinguished leadership in the pol-
itical and cultural life of Canada."

Introduced in Alberta
TORONTO (JTA) — The first
human rights bill in the western
Canada province of Alberta was
introduced in the Alberta Legisla-
ture by the government.
It bars denial of accommoda-
tion, public services or other fa-
cilities or denial of employment to
anyone because of race, color or
ethnic origin. The measure also
would prohibit reference to racial,
ethnic or religious origin in adver-
tisements for employment, except
for a domestic servant or when the
employer is a religious, philanth-
ropic, educational or similar type
of organization.
Trade unions and employers' or-
ganizations also would be prohi-
bited from excluding anyone from
membership on the same grounds.
