Blind Find New Life
in Israel; Number Mounts

JAFFA (ZINS) — Israel now
has 7,500 blind citizens as com-
pared with several hundred in
1954. They came into the country
with the large wave of mass aliyah
and began a new life here.
Philanthropic institutions as well
as individual volunteers have
established special workshops
where the blind are undergoing
training for skilled trades. They
produce dishware, leather and
straw handwork and even art
decorations.
In the evening the blind
assemble in special clubs wher
they spend their leisure time
chess competitions or in commu-
nity singing. Three evenings a
week they devote to learning
Braille. Such clubs are now located
in Jerusalem, Jaffa and Natanya.
These victims of fate have found
in their new homeland a new con-
tent in life. Hadassah's Eye Bank
program has done much to help
them.

JERUSALEM — The agriculture
ministry reported Tuesday that
two-thirds of all field crops have
been damaged by Israel's severe
drought with damages estimated
at 45,000,000 pounds ($15,000,000).
The ministry reported also that
of. the approximately 4,000,000
acres sown this season nearly 2,-
500,000 had been spoiled by the
drought and that all field crops
south of Beersheba had been
affected. Since such areas were
