A Hit in Berlin

WEST BERLIN—Sholem Alei-
chem's comedy "200,000" is in its
second month at the Volksbuhne
Theater, and Berliners are pack-
ing the house.
The story of Shimele Soroker,
the Russian-Jewish tailor, and
Bailke, his beautiful daughter, is
being *produced by Peter Frye, a
Canadian-born Israeli, and acted by
a cast of non-Jewish German ac-
tors.

The death last month of
Martin Berliner, a Vienna-born
Jew, who had portrayed Shimele
during the first weeks of the
run, caused an interruption and
change in the cast. His replace-
ment is Sigurd Lohde.

Director of the Volksbuhne, Er-
win Piscator, chose the sentimental
story as a contrast to the "Investi-
gation," a play about Auschwitz's
horrors, that preceded "200,000."
Berlin drama critic recalled that
"200,000" was first shown in the

city more than 30 years ago,
creating a sensation. He ques-
tioned the actors' knowledge of
Sholem Aleichem's world, with its

"naive jesting and the intricate

language."
