Community Colleges
Program Launched

A special election to authorize
and finance the Wayne County
Community College District will be
held on May 9.
A county committee of leading
citizens, headed by the chairman,
Leonard Woodcock, UAW vice-
president. and the honorary co-
chairmen, Mayor Jerome P. Cav-
anagh and William M. Day, presi-
dent of Michigan Bell, including
Joseph Ross, co-chairman, and Ben
Nathanson, a committee member,
will spearhead a drive for voter
approval of the community college
system.
At an orientation meeting last
Friday, Leonard Woodcock stress-
ed the importance of the program.
He said:
"I believe that the formation of
the Wayne County Community Col-
lege District is one of the most
important matters that will come
before our people in many years.
I urge all citizens and organiza-
tions to study these proposals and
to pledge all of their energies and
resources in support of County
Propositions 1 and 2 on the May
9 ballot."
Mayor Cavanagh said:
"If we are to provide the high-
er educational facilities required to
prepare our children for a produc-
tive and satisfying adult life we
must give them the opportunity of
a post high school education.
Community colleges will be a
giant step forward in this area."
