LONDON — Prison terms rang-
ing from six months to five years
were imposed Tuesday on six
former members of the tiny British
National Socialist Party, who were
convicted of maliciously setting
fire" to two East London syna-
gogues last July.
Hugh Hughes, 27, was given a
five-year term. Malcolm Sparks,
19, was sentenced to four years.
Colin Rainburd, 20, and Graham
Chant, 18, each received three-
year terms. Paul Dukes, 19, was
given the six-month term. Alex
Gordon, 23, was found guilty of
complicity in only one of the two
arson efforts and received a three-
year term.
Dukes, Chant and Rainburd had
pleaded guilty before the trial.
Hughes, Sparks and Gordon
pleaded not guilty. Sparks changed
his plea to guilty last week. They
were accused of starting fires at
the Ilford District Synagogue and
the Leabridge Road Synagogue.
Justice Phillimore, in imposing
sentence, denounced the defend-
ants' association with the neo-
Nazi movement, describing the
doctrines of the movement as
"those of Hitler and the Nazi
Party of many years ago." The
jurist emphasized that the
defendants were not being
punished for their beliefs be-
cause "anybody in this country
can believe anything they like."
But, he told the six youths, "You
have chosen to interfere with the
freedom of worship of respectable
Jewish citizens of this country and
to destroy their property. You
defaced the walls of their syna-
gogues and then set fire to them."

The jurist said he had no doubt
that the defendants were led to
the acts "by the indoctrination you
have received in this pernicious
movement" and that he was con-
vinced that the leaders of the
neo-Nazi movement "inculcated
not only hatred of the Jews and
colored people but also encouraged
active steps against them. These
are grave crimes, and it's my duty
to make an example of you in the
hope that those who share your
beliefs will think twice before fol-
lowing your example."
German iron crosses and badges
of the Hitler youth movement, the
SS and the German army, were
found at the home of Sparks.
Inspector Albert
Detective
Wickstead testified that Sparks
told him he had been an Ober-
sturmfuchrer (lieutenant colonel)
in the British National Socialist
movement. Sparks described the
leader of the movement, Colin
Jordan, as a "true Englishman."
In a written statement, Sparks
admitted he had joined with the
five other members of the British
National Socialist group in setting
fire to synagogues. In the state-
ment, Sparks said that at the
Ilford synagogue, he and "a friend"
carried to the synagogue's front
door a bomb made of acetone and
gasoline designed by "one of the
lads."
Sparks, who later left the move-
ment, said the group set fire to
the synagogues on orders from
"the highest authority." The in-
spector also testified that Hughes
admitted he had made the bomb
for the Ilford synagogue arson
attack.

JERUSALEM — A prominent
Soviet diplomat stationed in Israel
declared Tuesday night in a pub-
lic lecture that the "Tashkent
spirit" could exert a most impor-
tant influence on Arab-Israeli re-
lations and possibly bring about
a solution to the Middle East dead-
lock.
The Soviet government recently
persuaded India and Pakistan to

fire agreement in their border con-
flict was worked out with Soviet

MONTEVIDEO (JTA)—The de-
nunciation of Israel at the Com-
munist-sponsored Tri - Continental
Solidarity Conference in Havana
last month was strongly criticized
Monday by the government of
Uruguay.
The Uruguayan government de-
clared in a statement that it
could not "let pass in silence the
declaration against the Israeli
state" adopted at the Havana con-
ference. The conference called for
severance of "all political relations
with Israel, its economic and cul-
tural institutions and its expulsion
from international organizations."
The Havana resolution con-
demned the Zionist movement and
the existence of Israel "in the oc-
cupied part of Palestine."
The Uruguayan statement stress-
ed that "to discuss the right of
the Jewish people to have a fath-
erland and a home is an attitude
which the Uruguayan government
cannot admit." The statement de-
scribed Israel as a "democratic
state" and rejected "all ideologies
which, pretending to seek the dis-
appearance of Israel, are only
making patent their anti-Semit-
ism and anti-democratic attitudes."
