Quiz on Use of
Wine at Wedding

• Why are two cups of wine
filled for the wedding feast?
There are two recitations of
benedictions after the wedding
feast which rec, uire a cup of wine.
One is the set of blessings that
compose the Grace after meals.
This requires a cup of wine if the
Grace is recited in public such as
at a wedding feast. The other is
the set of nuptial blessings which
has once before been recited under
the canopy. This requires a cup of
wine since it represents a public
proclamation of thanksgiving. Since
there is a standing requirement
that no two holy obligations are to
be executed over one cup of wine
and that each function requires its
own cup of wine (Talmud Bavil,
Pesachim 102:b) we thus pour two
cups of wine after the wedding
feast. Over the first the benedic-
tions of the Grace after Meals is
recited. This is then set down and
the second cup of wine is picked
up and over it is pronounced the
set of nuptial benedictions (Masse-
ket Soferim 19:11).
Why is it that when the nuptial
blessings are rectified under the
canopy, the blessing over the
wine is recited first, while when
the nuptial blessings are recited
after the meal the blessing over
the wine is recited last?
The basic reason for this prac-
tice is a practical one. If the bene-
diction over the wine were to be
recited first before the other nup-
tial blessings, one might get the
erroneous impression that the
benediction over the wine was re-
lated only to the set of blessings
which comprise the Grace after
Meals which in such a case would
be the immediate precedent to the
blessing over the wine. In such a
case the blessing would then apply
only to the first cup of wine. Re-
versing the order of the benedic-
tion, and thus reciting the benedic-
tion over the wine last, makes it
impossible that the benediction
over the wine applies to both sets
of blessings and to both acts—the
recitation of the Grace after Meals
and the nuptial blessings.
Why is the wine from the two
cups used at the wedding feast
mixed together after the bene-
dictions are recited?
Obviously, it is not possible to
recite the benediction over wine
holding both cups. Actually, the
second cup is picked up after the
first is set down to recite the nup-
tial blessings. Then the first is
picked up and the second set down
in order to recite the blessing over
the wine. In order, then, to have
the blessing over the wine apply
to both cups, the contents of the
cups are mixed together. Some
claim that this is symbolic of the
destinies of the bride and groom
being blended together whereas
before the wedding each went his
own way.

`More Than Half' in Union
of Soviet Writers Called
Anti .Semites by Author

LONDON (JTA) — Valery Tar-
sis, the anti-Communist Soviet
writer who has been allowed to
come to Britain to lecture, told a
press conference here last week-
end that "more than half" of the
members of the Soviet Writers
Union "are anti-Semitic." He
added: "I consider this one of the
problems there."
Tarsis said that many members
of the board of the Soviet Writers
Union had "often" told him they
considered themselves anti-Semitic
and had complained that "one of
the troubles with the Writers
Union was that more than half
of its members were Jews."
