Group Studies' Great Challenge' Prof. Uriel Simon, Noted Israel Scholar, to Address Bar-Ilan Women, Feb. 24 Mrs. Max Stollman, nation al chairman of American Women for Bar-Ilan University, announces that Dr. Uriel Simon, associate profes- sor at Bar-Han, will address the semi-annual meeting of the Detroit Chapter of Bar-Ilan Women's Or- ganization, at the Jewish Center, noon Feb. 24. Dr. Simon's topic will be "Is- rael: A New State and an Ancient People." The musical program will feature the Bel-Canto Choral Group directed by Cantor Simon Bermanis. Simon was born in Je- rusalem in 1929 He spent a year of "National Service"in a kibbutz in 1946, studied for a year at City Col- lege of New York in 1947, and then, in 1948 - 49, served Dr. Simon in the Israel army. From 1950 to 1953, Dr. Simon specialized in Bible, history and education at the Hebrew Univer- sity. From 1954 to 1958 he did educational work among the new immigrants in the Ma'abarot- transitional camps — of Har-Tuv and Beer-Sheba. During that time he published a number of mono- graphs and articles in educational periodicals about the problems of immigrants and the clash of cul- tures. He was a post-graduate student in the Bible at the Hebrew Univer- sity from 1959 to 1961. His doc- toral thesis was on the subject "The Concepts of Space and Time in Biblical Thinking." He was a lecturer in Bible at Bar-Ilan in 1962 and in 1965 became an assist- ant professor and senior lecturer. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 22—Friday, February 11, 1966 Benno Levi Named Assistant to Sinai's Financial Administrator Sinai Hospital Controller Benno Levi has a new title, assistant to the administrator for financial af- fairs, and some additional respon- sibilities related to the building program, as well as other pro- jects. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President Dr. Julien Priver. The 41-year-old Levi, born in Alsfeld, Germany, was graduated from Detroit's Central High School in 1942. He was office boy at The Jewish News that year. He entered military service af- ter graduation and served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater. Levi was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry on Guam and the Bronze Star for service on Okinawa. Levi returned home in 1946 and entered Wayne State University, from which he received a BA de- gree in 1949. He spent five years in the controller's office of the City of Detroit and then eight years as controller and treasurer of the Lee Mortgage Co. before coming to Sinai. An Oak Park resident, Levi and his wife Ruth have six, children. The second annual dinner of the Beth Yehudah Parent-Teachers As- sociation will take place 6:30 p.m. March 1 at Imperial Catering Co.
