Montreal Hadassah-WIZO Group Produces
`A Treasure for My Daughter' Guide Book

A Montreal Hadassah — WIZO
chapter that was formed in 1947
devoted its cultural efforts to stu-
dying homemaking, including the
holidays, preparation for them,
the relevant prayers, recipes, etc.
The result of their efforts is a
book—"A Treasure for My Daugh-
ter" — published by Hawthorn
Books, (70 5th, NY 11).
Edited by Bessie (Mrs. Joseph)
W. Batist, this reference work
contains, in addition to the descrip-
tions of holidays and explanations
for their observance and for
preparations for them, a recipe
section that was. compiled by
Sarah Ein, Anne Warshaw and
Mary Davids.
Since the volume is based on
conversations between mothers
and daughters and is intended as a

guide for daughters in their in-
troduction to homemaking, the
series of discussions commences
appropriately with "Bethrothal
and Marriage," indicating the
divine institution of marriage and
the primary religious duties in-
volved.
The subjects then discussed are
Kashrut, the Mezuzah, Sabbath,
Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Suk-
kot, Hanukah, Hamisha Asar,
Purim, Passover, Lag b'Omer,
Shavuot, and the Three-Week
Period preceding it.
There is a special article on Ha-
dassah. Each of the articles is by-
lined by a member of Ethel Ep-
stein Ein Chapter of Hadassah-
WIZO.
As addenda there are 65
pages of recipes; explanatory
notes on circumcision, pidyon
ha-ben and Bar Mitzvah; laws
governing mourning; numerous
benedictions for various occa-
sions and holidays; a 25-year
calendar of Jewish festivals; a
list of essential books for the
Jewish home and an index to re-
cipes.
In addition to the miscellaneous
recipes there are many menus and
recipes appended to each holiday
article in the book.
The experiment which resulted
in the production of this volume is
most interesting. It shows what an
organizational effort can produce
when members are dedicated to a
purpose. It is a volume that will
serve a good purpose in the ad-
vice and guidance it offers.

Service to Private Schools •

The Workmen's Circle h a s
voiced its support of the American
Civil Liberties Union law suit
against public law 343, authorizing
"auxiliary services" to parochial
and religious schools.
In a letter to Ernest Mazey, head
of the Michigan ACLU, the Work-
men's Circle Michigan District
Committee sites its traditional op-
position to state support of reli-
gious institutions and commends
the ACLU on the action it brought
seeking. to contest the law's con-
stitutionality.
In a supporting statement, Frank
Newberg, chairman of the W. C.
Michigan District Committe e,
describes the "auxiliary services"
as contrary to the constitution of
the United States and calls the
argument of aid to children "a thin
cloak failing to disguise the fact
that churches will be relieved of
some of their financial obligation."
