War II he served as Master
of various Palestinian vessels em-
ployed in ferrying troops and
ammunition in the Allied cause.
In 1948, Captain Sagi joined the
Zim Lines and was given com-
mand of the 5,000 gross ton S/S
Negbah, one of the first ships in
the Zim fleet. The Negbah had
been built in Holland in 1915 and
was once well known in America
as the "Ecuador" in the trans-
Pacific service of the Pacific Mail
Line and later as the "Santa
Olivia" in the inter-coastal service
of the Grace Line. Under Captain
Sagi's command, the vessel was

chiefly employed in the mass
transportation of immigrants to
Israel. In 1956, Captain Sagi re-
ceived command of Israel's first
trans-Atlantic passenger liner, the
S/S Jerusalem.
At his request he was trans-
ferred in 1958 to the brand new
15,000 deadweight ton cargo motor-
ship Ampal which opened the Zim
Lines service to U.S. Gulf ports.
Later commands were the new
bulk carriers Elat and Timna.
His son, Captain Uri Sagi, is
presently in command of a Zim
ship and a grandson is an officer
in the Israel Navy.
