joint or separate return. To file

graduate students, many of them
from this area.
Fellowships provide enough
funds for a full-time faculty mem-
ber to devote his entire time to a
research project for one academic
quarter. Research grants-in-aid as-
sist faculty and graduate students
in the purchase of supplies, equip-
ment or, other expenses necessary
to the development of specific
research projects.

Associate professors receiv-
ing research fellowships included
Ralph Epstein of Oak Park, psy-
chology; and Murray Seidler, of
Birmingham, political science.
Assistant professors are Robert
Broner of Highland Park, hum-
anistic studies, and Richard M.
Spector of Huntington Woods,
physics.

Max M. Fisher, recent re-elected rational' chairman of the United
Jewish Appeal, has assumed so active a role that his fame as a
campaigner is gaining added ground almost daily. He was the fea-
tured speaker at the UJA Western Regional conference the weekend
of Jan. 28-30 at the Del Coronado Hotel, Coronado, Calif., and on
Jan. 31 at a big gifts meeting of the United Jewish Fund, campaign
of the Jewish Federation—Council of Greater Los Angeles. He will
be the principal speaker on Feb. 22 at a big gifts meeting of the
Jewish Welfare Fund in Milwaukee, Wis. The above photo shows
Fisher with Henry Ford II when both addressed the Midwest con-
ference in Chicago two weeks ago.

a joint return, both husband and
wife must be either an American
citizen or a resident alien at all
times during the taxable year. You
do not file a joint return by merely
including your wife's income in
your return . . . both of you must
sign it.
A joint return can be filed on
either the Form 1040 or the Form
1040A. Read the instructions to see
if you are eligible to use the 1040A
since everyone cannot use it.
Marital status is determined as
of the last day of the taxable year.
The instruction book explains how
to determine your marital status.
If your husband or wife died dur-
ing the year, you are considered
married for the entire year and
you may file a joint return. If an
executor or administrator has been
appointed, the surviving spouse
and the executor or administrator
must sign the return. Otherwise,
the surviving spouse will sign and
indicate that he or she is the
surviving spouse; such as, John
Jones (Surviving Spouse).
If a refund is due when one
spouse is deceased, secure a Form

1310 from the Internal Revenue
Service. Attach the completed
Form 1310 together with a copy
of the certificate of death to the
return.
