Orthodox Synagogue 'Blacklisted' in East SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (JTA)— A ban on an Orthodox synagogue in suburban Longmeadow was de- clared by the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada. The congregation is Bnai Jacob Synagogue. The ban strips the synagogue of its sanctity and forbids its use for services and other religious events by the Orthodox communities of Springfield and Longmeadow. Dr. Isaac Lewin, Yeshiva U. Historian, to Speak at Vaad-Merkaz Banquet Dr. Isaac Lewin, professor of Jewish history and political sci- ence at Yeshiva University, will be guest speaker at the 28th an- nual banquet of the Vaad Hara- bon•m and Merkaz 6 p.m. Feb. 27 at Cobo Hall. The announcement was made by Morris Karbal, general chairman of the banquet. Guest of honor at the event will be communal lead- er Irwin I. Cohn. Julius Rotenberg is chairman of the patrons com- mittee. Dr. Lewin is recognized as one of Orthodox Jewry's foremost elected representative. With the outbreak of World War II, he turned his efforts to rescue work after barely escaping from the Nazis. Within three months after V-E Day, Dr. Lewin was in Europe on a relief and rehabilitation mis- sion, and he contacted the remain- ing inmates of Nazi concentration camps as well as the displaced per- sons who survived the holocaust. The rabbinic body charged the synagogue and its ritual commit- tee with alleged severing of "the historic character of the syna- gogue" and with "deviating from spokesmen before international the standards of Orthodox Juda- bodies and its accredited repre- ism." sentative to the United Nations It also charged that the congre- Educational, Scientific and Cul- gation had brought "false accusa- tural Organization. tions" against its former rabbi, Born in Poland, he began pub- who had served the synagogue 25 years. DR. ISAAC LEWIN During World War II, Dr. Lewin was co-editor of the "Black Book of Polish Jewry," and recently he edited "These Will I Remember" (three volumes in Hebrew), con- taining biographies of Jewish reli- gious leaders who died as martyrs of World War II. Dr. Lewin has undertaken the defense of many important Jew- ish causes. It was at his urging that the UN Subcommission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities agreed in 1952 to study discrim- ination in the area of religious rights and practices. The study resulted, in 1960, in the adoption of "Principles Against Religious Discrimination," the first internationally approved basic rules on the subject. In his book, "In the Struggle Against Discrimination," Prof. Le- win has provided a guide for those who seek information on shehita and calendar reform, two import- ant issues effecting world Jewry. He is a prolific writer who has be- come considered an expert on in- ternational law and humane leg- islation. He has published works in English, Hebrew, Yiddish, Polish and German.
