From childhood, through his
journalistic career, now as a real
estate operator, his poetry has
continued to stem from the muse
that has inspired him. The result
of his collective efforts is a book
of humorous verses, "A Time for
Rhyme and Reason," published by
Exposition Press (386, Park, S.,
He first desired to use a title
like rhyme with some human sea-
soning, but he has decided "to
prove that there was rhyme with
some human reasoning."
Among his poems is one en-
titled "My Bar Mitzvah Lament,"
in which he looks forward to being
"a kid again—just to play and
have fun." That's after going
through practicing his Haftorah
"to become a man!"
His family, human event s,
worldly experiences, scores of oc-
currences, life and its challenges
are utilized for the fun of writ-
ing these verses which will draw
chuckles in nearly every instance
of the more than 70 poems in
"A Time for Rhyme and Reason."

The Israeli artist, Shalom, born
in the village of Safed high in the
hills of Galilee some 70 years
ago, came late to painting. For
more than half a century he
worked at various trades—chiefly
watchmaking, but also as a silver-
smith and stonemason. Fond of
children, he spent his spare time
making wooden toys decorated
Nine years ago, after making a
bird of paradise which he wished
to color brightly, he asked his
neighbor, an artist, for some paints.
The artist watched Shalom decor-
ate the bird, and urged him to
paint his impression on paper. Sha-
lom returned home with a few
paints and brushes and gradually a
sheaf of temporas and oils accum-
ulated. Since then, his paintings
have been exhibited in galleries
and museums in Tel Aviv, New
York, Chicago, Paris, London and
Zurich, and are included in mu-
seums and private collections
throughout the world.
Shalom contributed to UNICEF
the design entitled "Birds and
