Dr. Saul Adler, Noted Microbiologist, Dies in Israel; Cousin of Rabbi Adler JERUSALEM-Prof. Saul Adler, Russian-born authority on parasi- tology and former dean of the faculty of medicine at the Hebrew University, died Tuesday at age 70. He was recipient of the Chalmers Gold Medal of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine, the Lavern Medal of the Societe de Pathologi- que. He visited that country in 1964 at the invita- tion of the Chinese Academy of Science and lectured at Peking University in 1965. Prof. Adler was a first cousin of Dr. Morris Adler of Cong. Shaarey Zedek (their -fathers were brothers) and visited Detroit twice in the last eight years. Rabbi Adler described his cous- in as "a great personality, yet a modest, erudite man, an idealist" who started his work at the He- brew University "in a kitchen on Mount Scopus that he used for a laboratory." He had only recently retired after his 40th year with the university. Among his writings, the microbi- ologist translated Darwin's "Origin of the Species" into Hebrew. Rabbi Adler said Dr. Albert Sabin told him he became inter- ested in Palestine through Saul Adler during World War II.
