Sophia, Loren's Role as 'Judith'

By HERBERT G. LUFT

HOLLYWOOD - Kurt Unger, age of 11 had escaped Nazi per- chael Hayes prepared the final

motion picture, "Judith," at the Palestine with his family in 1933.
The idea for his movie was stimul-
ated by his own experience and
long latent in his mind until he,
while in Rome during 1962, dis-
cussed the theme, a modern-day

love story woven around the bibli-
cal character of "Judith," with
producer Carlo Ponti and his act-
ress-wife Sophia Loren. Unger en-
visioned the yarn against the back-
ground of partitioning of the Holy
Land in 1947 and the subsequent
battle for life of the new State
of Israel.
Unger had written his outline
with Sophia Loren in mind, though
Ponti himself was not participat-
ing in the venture. Lawrence Dur-
rell developed the thin story into
a still unpublished novel and de-
riVed his own screen treatment
from the work of fiction. John Mi-

"Judith" now has been press-
previewed at Paramount Studios
in Hollywood and received with
mixed emotions, though technical-
ly the motion picture gained high
praise for staging of mass scenes,
special effects, photography and
for the sensitive score by com-
poser Sol Kaplan.
I am sure that the original
adaptation presented to Mr. and
Mrs. Ponti and received with so
much enthusiasm must have been
less obvious, less pretentious and
less flag-waving. In the • current
epic that unfolds on the screen,
the sole obstacle to the success of
the 1948 war for independence
seems to be one tank commander
formerly in Germany's Africa
Corps who has the key to victory
or defeat. The audience is made to
believe that the Israelis are in

of the action centering around a

Revive Anti-Semitic Theme

Hans Habe, who spent the war
years in Hollywood, is writing the
screenplay for a new, denazified
version of Lion Feuchtwanger's
"Jud Suess," returning the epic
to the author's original concept
expressed in the earlier Conrad
Veldt movie made in England
around 1933. Berlin film producer
Hans Oppenheimer is trying to re-
establish our sympathy for the
character of "Jew Suess" so gross-
ly distorted by director Veit Har-
lan in the wartime-second edition
made for the purpose of Ger-
many's anti-Semitic propaganda.
