The Times called it "one of the most arresting and devastating pictures" from Europe "or any- where else in several years." The review called the performance by Ida Kaminska, the celebrated Po- lish Yiddish actress, "a wondrous image of Old World innocence." The Herald Tribune said the film was "brilliant in performance and extraordinary in accomplish- ment." The World Telegram and Sun declared that "the small Czech film industry has quietly hatched a masterpiece." We recently received a letter -from Sister Josetta, and although it is long to publish in its entirety, one paragraph seems to tell a great deal about her . . . "I have been working with another Sister at the Detention Home for Children here in Miami. It is called Youth Hall. We have about 36 girls now and about 90 boys. They are all there as a result of very serious offenses. Murder, incest, rape are only a few of them. These kids are a product of their environment. They range in age from 8-16. Just before Christmas we went from store to store and asked for things which were either broken or soiled and couldn't be used. We spent days and nights repairing, fixing, washing and ironing, wrapping these gifts for our new friends. I can't tell you how good people were to us. This is most especial- ly true of the Jewish people. Be- sides all the toys and clothes they gave us, we also had $69 in cash with which we were able to pur- chase goodies for a party." * * * OVERHEARD BY Pete Clayton at the Detroit Free Press . . . Ad salesman to boss . . . "You think these astronauts have a tough job? All they do is explore space. I have to sell it!" * * * ELEVEN YOUNGSTERS, one fifth grader and the others sixth graders, decided recently to get together and raise some money for the fight against leukemia . . . and so these enterprising and youthful humanitarians put on "The Shindig" song and dance af- ternoon in the basement of fellow performer Debbie -Kahrnoff . . . The 25-cent admission included free lemonade and $22 was raised for this most worthy cause. * * * SYLVIA HUBERT says that if you make a right turn from the left lane, you're probably just careless and reckless — and not what the fellow behind you called you. * * * HELEN MARCUS had offered to drive her new neighbor, a widow in her early 70s, to the new Food Giant Market on 10 Mile Rd. and Scotia in Oak Park ... When Ellen stopped at her house, she came out dressed as stylishly as though she were going to a tea party .. . Surprised that she had gone to such trouble just for a grocery shopping trip, Helen complimented her on her appearance . . . The lady said, "I'm merely following the advice my mother gave me many years ago. She loved to ride, and her motto was: 'Always wear your spurs. You never know when you may meet a horse!'
