Beth Nehama Project Acclaimed, Boost Objective to $100,000 Goal Hearty responses to the Beth Nehama building project in Israel brought such prompt responses at the luncheon inaugurating the campaign, Monday at the Pontchar- train Hotel, that the goal was boosted to $100,000. The original plan was to erect a children's home at Rishon LeZion for $60,000, but with $43,750 announced raised at the luncheon, Louis Boyar of Los Angeles, honorary chairman of the project, and Mrs. Norman I. Leemon, who presided, told of the enlarged objective. Nationally prominent personal- ities and an Israeli leader joined in honoring Mrs. Schaver, who an- nounced that her personal gift to- wards the $100,000 goal will be $10,000 in memory of her grand- mother, Nehama, "and all other Nehamas that preceded her in the family." In addition to Boyar, speak- ers at the luncheon included Mrs. Joseph H. Ehrlich, Helen Gahagan Douglas, popular act- ress and former Congresswom- an from California, and Sho- shana Hareli, president of the Council of Women's Organiza- tions in Israel. Boyar told of plans in 15 other U.S. cities • to build children's homes in Israel, similar to the one that will honor Mrs. Schaver. He commended the Detroit women for inaugurating this great •program of aid to little children from under- developed countries who are to be better integrated into Israel. In these homes, he said, mothers as well as their children will receive proper training for their new life in Israel. Mrs. Ehrlich cited Mrs. Schaver for her numerous gifts to the De- troit community and for the im- portant role she has played in her own right through the years and together with her husband, the late Morris Schaver. Mrs. Douglas, who had played an important role in behalf of the Zionist cause while she was in Congress and in the years that followed, called the pro- posed children's home an im- portant pilot project and com- mended Israel for the devotion with which newcomers from un- derdeveloped lands are being welcomed into the new land and then properly trained to take their place with the more ad- vanced peoples. Mrs. Hareli explained the pro- gram of sponsoring children's homes in Israel, which will func- tion for infants from 1 112 years old to 6. These culturally deprived, she said, will be cared for, will be guided in supervised play, will go home nights and will be with their families on Sabbaths and holidays. Thus, she said, while getting train- ing and good care, family life will be kept intact.
