Sherwin Robert Rodgers, the producer, selected the Theater Group of Los Angeles production for the tour because he felt that its interpretation was closer to the idea the author had in mind than the New York version. Rod- gers had met with Hochhuth in Zurich prior to the arrival of the play in the United States and had heard from him some of his rea- sons for writing it. "It's the problem of each in- dividual," said Hochhuth, "how he can live with guilt.- Whether he becomes indolent or superficial. I wrote this play. That's how I lived with my guilt." The writer refer- red to his childhood as a member of the Hitler Jugend, the circum- stance which had preyed on his mind until he suffered a nervous breakdown after his escape from the Nazi terror. He further said: "If I had killed someone, I can never get rid of it, no matter what I do. So I must live with this feeling of guilt and gradually get used to it. But if you measure writing a book against the murder of only one child, it is, of course, nothing." Rodgers believes that the Thea- ter Group production expresses Hochhuth's intent — that all men who are apathetic in the face of inhumanity to their fellow men are guilty. The direction by Gordon Davidson and the scenery, lighting and costumes by Peter Wexler carry out this idea, according to him. He also said that Hochhuth had stated to the Associated Press following the New York opening that while he admired the courage of the producer, "there was prac- tically nothing about the produc- tion with which I agree." The cast of "The Deputy" has been recruited from the top ranks of film studios and television. Most of the actors, headed by Robert Brown (in the role of Fa- ther Ricardo Fontana), who won praise for his performance as Stephen Dedalus in Burgess Mere- dith's "Ulysses in Nighttown" are also veterans of Broadway produc- tions. Featured players include W. A. Glover of the Stratford Shakes- perian Festival who enacts the role of Pope Pius XII, Ronald Long of the "Old Vic" as The Cardinal, Noah Keen of "Arrest and Trial" as Gerstein, Paul Lambert, one of Playhouse 90's regular stars, as The Doctor, and Ian Wolfe who has been familiar to movie- goers since his famous "stool pigeon" role in "Mutiny on the Bounty," as Father General. s'•e;. , .!.. .1 . a ilti•Iftttt; F
