He added that while Israel remained ready to pay com- pensation to former Arab residents of what is now Israel, the country could not afford to yield any terri- tory, particularly because Israel must allow for possible future im- migration from Russia, Western Europe and the United States. Asked if this projected immigra- tion did not make the Arabs fear Israeli "expansion," the Premier stressed that Israel had accepted the status quo on borders once and for all. Dr. Oppler made the state- ment in replying to a protest from the CJC against the pos- sible deferment, during 1966 and 1967 of an estimated $100,- 000,000 in each year in such cases. Those affected would be about 150,000 claimants, most of them Jews, who were in Iron Curtain countries in October 1953, the deadline for filing claims in the original West Ger- man indemnification laws, and hence could not file. A special hardship fund was set up to cover their needs but the government obtained postpone- ment legislation on grounds of "budgetary difficulties." In his reply, the envoy declared that his government did not intend "to evade the fulfillment of its solemn obligation for the indem- nification." (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) JERUSALEM — Implicit Saudi Arabian recognition of passports issued by Israel was seen here as a possibility when it was learned that the Palestine committee of the Arab League has been requested by some Moslem leaders to permit Moslems living in Israel to make holy pilgrimages to Mecca. Thus far, Israeli Moslems have not been allowed to participate in the traditional Haj to Mecca. Israel has repeatedly told Mosley- leaders in this country that members of their community wishing t_ . make such a pilgrimage would be allowed to do so, but Saudi Arabia has refused to permit such trips. Israeli Moslem leaders, it became known Tuesday, have asked Moslem statemen from Asia and Africa who have visited Israel to intercede on their behalf in regard to ful- filling their religious obligations by going to Mecca for holy visits. AND GOURMET DINNER DAILY DETROIT OFFICE: UN 4 3190 - NEW YORK—Twenty-four hours in a concentration camp in Janu- ary 1939 are depicted in the docu- mentary filar "Nur Ein Tag" (Only One Day) shown on a local tele- vision station last week. The New York Times television reviewer called the' film "extraordinary" be- cause it "showed the early siege of the barbarity in especially vivid terms." The West German film produc- tion of a script by Gunther R. Lys, the German author who spent more than four years in a concentration camp, was first shown in West Ger- many as part of the observance of the 20th anniversary of the end of World War II. Central setting of the film was the main prison yard early in the mass roundup of Jews, Communists and others despised by the Hitler regime, Reviewer Jack Gould said the film was in the "nature of a dry run of the slaughter to follow . . . an unforgettable representa- tion of untold thousands caught in a moment when a part of civiliza- tion was running amok and decent society was enjoying an uncom- prehending doze." Gould said the power of the film is in small vignettes, like the quiet scene of a Nazi prison guard, who has just abused a prisoner, return- ing to discuss with a friend the problems of being a father. He added that if the nuclear desalina- tion project was successful, the process could also be used by the Arab countries and thus become a key to peace in the Middle East. The Premier deplored the fact that both Israel and Egypt must spend so heavily for arms when the money could so much better be used for internal development. Asked why Israel had rejected pro- posals to make the Middle East a nuclear-free zone, the Premier re- plied that neither Israel nor Egypt have nuclear weapons and that the first essential step therefore was to destroy conventional weapons. He said he felt an effort for gen- eral disarmament would be a wiser goal. The Premier asserted that time was on Israel's side. Summertime Hilda & Bernie Wieder's ADLER nom, sham sprielp, tr. 4.
