Major Groups of Nazi Victims Slam German Govt. for Payment Deferral "Torquemada," a tale of the Spanish Inquisition by Howard Fast, being published by Doubleday, offers the account of a dark incident in the infamous career of Thomas de Torquemada, history's grandest inquisitor. The novel's colorful 15th Cen- tury setting is the story of man's unceasing attempts to usurp the divine right of absolute judgement. It is a high point in Fast's develop- ment of the theme of man's basic inhumanity which has, over the past three decades, marked such notable novels as "Spartacus," "Citizen Tom Paine" and "Power." Fasts' title figure is a lonely man, Prior of Segovia and stern overseer of the local inquisition. Torquemada depends on the wealthy noble merchant, Alvero de Rafel, and his family for friend- ship and all his other human needs. Both men are summoned to the court at Seville: Alvero to counsel Isabella on a daring ven- ture proposed by a Genoese sail- or named Columbus, and Thomas to be named Grand Inquisitor of Spain by Ferdinand.
