Torres, Defender of Schwartzbard and Grynszpan, Dies in Paris at 74 (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) PARIS-Henry Torres, a promin- ent Jewish trial attorney, whose career included serving as defense attorney for two Jews who killed a Ukrainian pogrom leader and a Nazi diplomat, died here Tuesday at the age of 74. In 1927, he successfully de- fended Samuel Schwartzbard, a Jewish watchmaker, who was ac- quitted of killing in Paris Gen. Simon Petlura, head of the Pet- lura government in the Ukraine during the notorious pogroms which took place there in 1919. Schwartzbard admitted the killing in his trial but the jury held the murder was justified. Colleagues of Petlura testified that, though he had been nominally responsible for the 1919 pogroms, he took no part in the actual killings of Jews. The attorney contended that Schwartz- bard had avenged a crime against his people. Torres also was one of the attorneys who defended Herschel Grynszpan, a young Jewish refugee from Poland, who shot and killed Ernst von Rath, a member of the German embassy in Paris, in 1938. The shooting was used by the Nazi government as a pretext for the "Crystal Night" attack on Jewish persons and property in Germany on Nov. 9, 1938. The youth vanish- ed from a French jail during the war and is believed to have been tortured to death by the Nazis. Torres also was a journalist author, historian and playwright, as well as a legislator and justice. He served in the French National Assembly as a socialist from 1932 to 1936 and in the Senate as a pro- Gaullist member from 1948 to 1958. He was also assistant chief justice of the French High Court of Jus- tice from 1956 to 1958. Meeting to Honor Memory of A.
