Truman Capote's
Masterful Report
of Brutal Murder
Truman Capote performs the
role of a great reporter in his
latest work, "In Cold Blood," pub-
lished by Random House. A true
account of the murder, in cold
blood, of four innocent people whO
were totally unknown to the mur-
derers, this brilliant work traces
the background of the murderers,
gives an account of the family of
high repute that was annihilated,
describes life in jail before execu-
tion and the hanging.
It is a combination of sociological
studies, penology, law enforce-
ment, the dangers that lurk on the
roads on which people travel today
because of the irresponsibly insane
elements among us.
Capote's research was done to
perfection, and his reporting is
superb. In a masterful first section
of 74 pages, he depicts the activ-
ities of the family of four that was
murdered on Nov. 15, 1959, in
Holcomb, Kansas. He introduces
the reader, at the same time, to
the two murderers.
A fellow-convict of the two
criminals had told them, in their
jail, before their release, that he
had worked for a rich man in Hol-
comb. That's how they got an idea:
they thought the Clutters had a lot
of money in a safe and they began
to plan the robbery and the mur-
der. There was no money to speak
of when they got there, but they
performed the multiple murder.
The cruelty, the pose of the
crime, the trial, the appeals, the
tragic end
life in the jail, the
families involved---all combine to
make this a deeply moving story
which results in Truman Capote's
masterful account of a true event.
Sociologically, penologically, as a
study of human failings, this is a
tale that should make Capote's
book a best seller.
