In a manifesto published in "Nueva Sion," the prominent per- sonalities criticized the Soviet UN spokesman for an amendment it had proposed to the declaration against discrimination adopted by the General Assembly earlier this month. The Soviet amendment con- taining the objectionable compari- son between Zionism and Nazism, was not adopted. Asserting that the amendment was a "grave" action on the part of the Soviet Union, the Jewish intellectuals, who declared that they spoke out "as citizens who never acted against the USSR," said that the Russian statement ignored the historic role of the Zionist movement. Among the signers of the mani- festo were Dr. Moises Pollak, the outstanding biologist, and Dr. Jose Bleger, the prominent psy- choanalyist. Bar Mitzvah Quiz By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX (Copyright. 1966, JTA, Inc.) * * Why is the age of 13 consid- ered the age at which a boy as- sumes responsibility for his deeds, i.e. becomes Bar Mitzvah? There seems to be at least three lines of authority and reasoning for this measure. One of the earl- iest sources which set this age as the age of Bar Mitzvah is the Mish- nah (Aboth 5) which describes the various stages in the life of an in- dividual declaring the age of thirteen to be the age at which one is shouldered with the responsi- bility of keeping the command- ments. Commentaries on the Mishnah claim that the basis for this is drawn from the Pentateuch. Where the Bible speaks of an in- dividual as being responsible for the consequences of his deed the term "Ish" (Man) is often used. This term is taken as referring to a man who has attained the age of thirteen because Simon and Levi are referred to by this term in the Book of Genesis when they avenged the wrong that had been done to their sister Dinah (Genesis 34:25) and this situation occurred when they were thirteen years of age. In his response, Rabbi Asher simply states that the ruling that a thirteen year old male becomes culpable for his actions is one of the basic rules handed down to Moses at Sinai. Why is it that a Bar Mitzvah boy is called to the Torah for the Aliyah called "Maftir" (the last reading of the Sabbath which precedes the prophetic portion)? There are some authorities who claim that this is inappropriate because a boy can be called to the Torah for this portion even before he becomes Bar Mitzvah (with the exception of certain major Sab baths). They claim that the pur- pose of having the boy called up to the Torah is to demonstrate that he has reached the age of Bar Mitzvah and can therefore enjoy a privilege which was forbidden to him before. This took place after the prophetic por- tion since the discourse usually was related to the pentateuchal portion and the prophetic portion that was associated with it. Thus, for the sake of the synagogue decorum he would be called for the prophetic portion so that he could proceed after that with his discourse, as was usually the case with the Rabbis when they would deliver their discourse. a A 810 .COLORSCOPE" DANIEL HALLER.
