The Dimona 30 dunam-grove (71/2 acres) has this year borne fruit for the first time, already yielding one ton. The Arad planta- tion stands out by subsisting on the sparse rainfall alone, while the veteran grove, that of Gilat where the JNF planted 150 (37 1/2 acres) dunams, is now being en- larged by aonther 12 dunams (3 acres). The 150 dunam-planta- tion in the desert of Be'erotayim is irrigated by the infrequent floods coming through the wadi there in winter. Prior to her New York debut recital at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Jan. 28, Detroit pianist, Ruth Meckler Laredo, will give a solo recital in the Gold Room at Oakland University 8:30 p.m. Jan. 14. Works by Bach, Barbour, Ravel and Chopin are on the program. Since her return from a sum- mer tour with the Marlboro Chamber Group under the direc- tion of Rudolf Serkin, she has appeared in concert throughout the United States and Canada. Some of the major cities includ- ed Calgary, Montreal, Boston, Miami, New York and Washing- ton, D. C. In March she will be making her fifth European and South Ameri- can tour with her husband, violin- ist Jaime Laredo. Mrs. Laredo received her early training with Mischa Kottler and graduated from Mumford High School. Ac- cording to a certain lunatic fringe, a martini should be made at a ratio of five parts of gin to one part vermouth, or six to one, or seven, to one, eight to one, nine to one, ten to one, et. . . . This is not to say nationally recognized gourmets . . They advocate a martini engineered at about three parts gin to one part vermouth . Anything else is not a martini, they say, and we agree with them. . • . There are types running around loose that maintain that the shadow of a vermouth bottle, passed over a "shaker' of gin is all that is necessary to make a martini, but this is, of course, sheer folly . . . And while we are on the subject, a martini is never shaken (except at the Colony, in New York), because shaking a martini "bruises the vermouth" . . . Rath- er, it is stirred rapidly over small chunks of ice and poured into pre- chilled glasses . . Now to the matter of that all important ad- ditive . . . There are those who say that an olive spoils a martini by tainting its delicious flavor with oil, while a twist of lemon al- legedly alters the entire taste of the drink . . . As the man said, "If I had wanted lemonade, I would have ordered it." A MARTINI SHOULD NEVER BE MORE THAN THREE OR THREE AND A HALF TO ONE . . IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE STIRRED FURIOUSLY OVER SMALL CHUNKS (NOT CRUSH- ED) OF ICE . . . THEN IT SHOULD BE POURED INTO A PRE-CHILLED GLASS AND SERVED TEETH TINGLING COLD WITH ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE. Our research indicates that this same potion, served on the rocks, is also satisfactory ... But no mat- ter how a martini is made, as long as it is very cold, it proves to be a highly effective stimulant to the digestive juices. - SID HUDSON, ex-Detroiter now living on the coast, is another of the founders of the Saints and Sinners in Los Angeles who will be here Jan. 31 to inaugurate the start of Detroit's chapter of this famous organization . . .
