Israel Asked to OK
Oil Drilling Deal

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Is-
rael Petroleum Board has recom-
mended government approval for
an agreement signed recently be-
tween the Petrocana Oil Co. and
the Livingston Oil Co. of Tulsa,
for the exploration for petroleum
deposits along Israel's continental
shelf. Petrocana owns the con-
cession for such exploration.
It is now expected that opera-
tions on offshore drilling will
begin in April or May of this year
when a drilling contractor, a U.S.-
Mexican consortium, is scheduled
to send a 40-man team and a
drilling vessel. The probe will in-
clude six exploratory wells at var-
ious points along the coast at
distances ranging from just off-
shore to up to nine miles out.
The partners in the venture are
optimistic about the prospects of
finding oil and point out that in
the Gulf of Suez, where offshore
operations began in 1962, some
200,000,000 tons of proved recover-
able reserves have been dis-
covered.
Seismological surveys carried
out off Israel's Mediterranean
coast last summer have revealed
that there are several promising
structures along the coastline and
lead to the belief that oil is pre-
sent in at least the same quantity
as in the Gulf of Suez.

A woman who accepts sells
herself, a woman who gives sur-
renders. — French proverb.

Dr. Epstein's accompanying ex-
planatory essay on Judah Nasi fol-
lows:
When the Church forced the
Jews of Portugal to become Chris-
tians in the late 1490's, many of
them continued to practice Juda-
ism secretly. These secret Jews
were called Marranos, which is
Spanish for "pigs."
The Mendez family of Lisbon
were Marrano bankers with branch
offices in Holland and business
connections with the rulers of
France. They had long hoped to
move to a land where they might
cease to be Marranos. When Fran-
cisco Mendez, the head of the fam-
ily, died in 1536, his widow, Bea-
trice de Luna, left for Antwerp.
She took along her daughter Rey-
na, her nephew Joao Miguez, and
other relatives.

TEL AVIV — Negotiations be-
tween Premier Levi Eshkol's Ma-
pai-Achdut Avoda alignment and
the National Religious Party for
the latter's participation in the
next coalition government collaps-

maintained in a continued effort
to break the deadlock
The stumbling block continued
to be demands of the religious bloc
for concessions on religious issues.
The alignment charged that the
religious group had raised new de-

ginally presented in the negotia-
tions which have been going on
since Premier-designate E s h k o 1

alignment's emergence from the
Nov. 2 elections as Israel's largest
political bloc. The religious party
counter-charged that the alignment
had gone back on concessions it
had previously accepted.
While both sides publicly declar-
ed that religious party participa-

Christian state and very often was
used by Marranos on their way to
Turkey. Beatrice was arrested for
deserting Christianity and her
property was seized by the govern-
ment.
It is often darkest before dawn.
Joao Miguez escaped to Turkey,
where the sultan, dazzled by the
prospect of having the Mendez for-
tune in his country, declared that
Dona Beatrice was under his pro-
tection. The words of this powerful
ruler were not to be ignored, and
Venice released Beatrice Mendez
and her wealth.
Once in Moslem Turkey, the
family was at last able to shed its
Marrano cloak and live openly as
Jews. Beatrice changed her name
to Gracia. Joao proudly adopted
his Jewish name, Joseph Nasi, and ti!
