Jews Urge New Trial for Nazi Acquitted in Austria

BRUSSELS (JTA) — A request
that the Austrian government con-1
duct a new trial for Jan Verbelen,
the former Nazi general and leader
of the Belgian Fascists, who was
acquitted in Vienna last week of
charges of participation in mass
killings in Belgium during World
War II, was made here Tuesday
by a group of Jews who had fought •
in the Belgian resistance during ,
the war. The request was made
in a letter to the Austrian Am-
bassador here.
The Union of International
Resistance and Deportees issued
a statement from its headquarters
here expressing its indignation
and charging that the Nazi ideology
had left "deep traces" in Austria.
The union said this had been
shown previously in other "scan-
dalous sentences" in previous Nazi
war crimes trials.
The union added that the
Verbelen verdict was "one
more proof" of the "active and

criminals and their friends.
Justice Minister Pierre Wigny
told the Belgian Broadcasting
Service in an interview that he
was indignant over the acquittal.
He recalled Verbelen's 1947 death
sentence and said that he was
still considered here as under that
sentence and subject to its im-
plementation if he ever returned
to Belgium.
At the same time, protests over
Verbelen's acquittal continued to
mount from many other sources.
The Belgian government announced
it agrees with these sentiments
and said it would receive author-
ized representatives of various
Belgian patriotic organizations
who wish to file their protests.
At a meeting of the Council
of Ministers Tuesday, Deputy For-
eign Minister Henri Fayat reported
formally on the Verbelen case and
the man's acquittal by a Vienna
court.
In Frankfort, Norbert Wol-
lheim, a Jew who had survived
imprisonment in the Auschwitz
death camp and lives now in
New York, Tuesday told the
court trying three ex-Nazis how
one of the defendants coldly
munched on an apple while
"selecting" Jews to be gassed to
death in the camp's ovens.
Wollheim was the first prosecu-
tion witness in the two-week old
trial of three former members of
the Gestapo accused of having
participated in the killing of be-
tween 2,500,000 and 4,000,000 Jews
at Auschwitz. The defendants are

second for former Auschwitz of-
ficials and personnel. In the first
trial, which ended last August after
proceedings lasting 20 months, 16
Auschwitz men were found guilty,
six of them being sentenced to life
imprisonment. The current trial
is expected to last four months.

TEL AVIV (JTA)—A month-
long strike at the Argaman Textile
Works ended here Sunday with
the return to work of 500 employes
of the plant in Bnei Brak. The
workers walked out last month in
support of their demands for com-
pensation for those employes who
would lose their jobs when the
plant moves to a new site in the
Galilee.
The strikers decided to return
to work after the Histadrut, Is-
rael's labor federation, which had
opposed the strike, agreed to open
negotiations with the company's
management on -terms for compen_
sation of workers losing their jobs.
According to the terms of the
tentative settlement, the Histadrut
agreed to report to the employes
on the results of the negotiations
within six weeks with a provision
for any disagreements to be re-
ferred to the trade union depart-
ment of the Histadrut. The em-
ployes will have the right to appeal
any decisions to the Histadrut
central committee.
