Two Local Rabbis Send Peace Messages With Vietnam Truce Plea
7
In the pouring rain, on the sev-
enth night of Hanukah and Christ-
mas Eve, 200 Detroit citizens
gathered at Campus Martius to
pray for peace in Vietnam.
Because it was Sabbath, two
rabbis were unable to attend but
sent messages for peace. They
were Rabbi Morris Adler of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek and Rabbi Mordecai
S. Halpern of Cong. Beth Shalom.
Rev. James Laird, who led the
procession organized by the Citi-
zens' Committee for Peace in Viet-
nam, requested the extension of
the truce beyond New Year's Day.
In his statement, Rabbi Adler
said:
"Though I respect the govern-
ment's intentions, I want to rein-
force the climate for peace in our
country . . The American peo-
ple know what are the horrors of
war and are to be encouraged to
express their deep devotion to
peace.
"Since our country is democratic,
the leaders will recognize such a
ground swell of public opinion for
peace . . . We hope that our gov-
ernment will not permit national
pride or political consideration to
keep them from searching out
every avenue and possibility for
peace."
A discussion, "Beyond Civil
Rights — Next Steps to Equality,"
will highlight the next Jewish Com-
munity Council Delegate Assembly
at the Jewish Center 8:30 p.m.
Jan. 17.
Preliminary notice of the meet-
ing was sent to presidents and
delegates of affiliated organiza-
tions by Dr. Samuel Krohn, presi-
dent of the Jewish Community
Council.

Rabbi Halpern said:
"Tomorrow morning, in the
synagogue, we will chant a chapter
from the prophet Zechariah, —
especially designated for Hanukah.
And we will read, "For not by
power and not by might but by My
spirit — saith the Lord of Hosts."
And in churches throughout Amer-
ica the clarion call will be for
peace and good will to men, re-
gardless of race, color or creed."
"We wish to strongly proclaim
our grave concern about the seem-
ing lack of any common ethical
base to the present conduct of
American foreign policy in the
Vietnam war of southeast Asia," he
said.
