Israel's Gen. Anon
Outlines Policy
on Nuclear Plans

LONDON (JTA)—Israel's policy
regarding nuclear development in
its own country as well as in the
Middle East region as a whole was
spelled out unequivocally here by
Gen. Yigal Allon. Israel's Minister
of Labor.
Addressing the annual dinner
of the British Technion Society,
Allon discussed Israel's needs for
developing practical applioation of
science and technology for an ex-
panding population which„ he en-
visaged, would reach 3,000,000 by
1970. In order to exploit all of its
human and natural resources to
the fullest, he said, including its
project for the desalination of sea-
water, "there is a need for nu-
clear power."
Stressing the Egyptian claims
that its need for arms was moti-
-vated "not by aggression against
Israel but for defense against Is-
rael's aggression," Gen. Allon de-
clared: "If they are really inter-
ested in avoiding war, it should be
possible to come to some mutual

arrangement—if not for peace, at
least to convert the armistice
agreement into a non-aggression
pact eventually with effective
guarantees against surprise at-
tacks. In the strategic conditions in
our area, if surprise attacks are
ruled out, a major war has been
ruled out."

Of every 100 defective children
who survive their second birth-
day, an estimated 60 will need
specialized medical, educational or
custodial care. The National
Foundation - March of Dimes helps
provide this care.

News From Hollywood

HOLLYWOOD—Stanley Kramer
announced the purchase of a still
unpublished novel, "Seek Out and
Destroy," by Irwin R. Blacker,
professor of cinema at the Uni-
versity of Southern California,
who presented it to the motion
picture producer in manuscript
form. The book, to be published in
England in March of 1966 by
Cassell & Gallimard, deals with
the current war in Vietnam. Black-
er served with the Army Engineers
in North Africa during World War
II, performed intelligence work
during the Korean struggle and a
few years ago wrote a book called,
"Guerilla Warfare—Irregulars and
Partisans," published then by
Simon and Schuster. "Seek Out
and Destroy" is his seventeenth
novel.

Kramer will make thepicture
next year after completing "An-
dersonville," from the screenplay
by Abby Mann. Both of the new
films are going to be released by
Columbia Pictures, the company
currently distributing Kramer's
"Ship of Fools."
Irving Allen will produce "The

Savage Canary," based on the dar-
ing exploits of Danish resistance

forces during World War II as re-
counted in the novel by David
Lampe. "The Savage Canary" goes
before the cameras next February
at Shepperton Studios near Lon-
don and on location sites in and
around Copenhagen. John Paxton
is writing the screenplay. Henry
Levin will direct the Technicolor
war epic for Columbia release.

Ely A. Landau and Oliver A.
Unger will co-produce nine major
features in 1966 for an aggregate
budget of more than $15,000,000.
They have currently in release,
through Allied Artists, "The Pawn-
broker," "Umbrellas of Cher-
bourg," "The Servant" and the
documentary film, "The Eleanor
Roosevelt Story." Completed and
scheduled for distribution are
"Sands of Beersheba," filmed in
its entirety in Israel with Diana
Baker and David Opatoshu; "King
and Country" starring Dirk Bo-
garde; "I Spy, You Spy," with
Senta Berger, Tony Randall and
Terry Thomas; and "The Secret

Agents," starring Henry Fonda

and Robert Ryan. Among the forth-
coming productions of the team
of Landau-Unger will be the multi-
million dollar costume picture,
"Cervantes," to be directed by
Vincent Sherman, with Alain De-
lon, Yul Brynner and Ava Gard-
ner, to be photographed in Spain
and Italy. "The Royal Perform-
ance," an Anglo-Soviet production,
will be filmed at the Gorski Studios
of Moscow, with Britain's Anthony
Asquith directing for Landau-
Unger. Other films on the com-
pany's schedule are "The Heart Is
A Lonely Hunter" from Carson
IVIcCullers' novel about the South,
with Warren Beatty set to star;
and "The Mad Woman of Chail-
lot," from the award-winning play
by Jean Giraudoux.

Carroll Baker-Garfein won her
suit against Paramount and Em-
bassy Pictures over breach of con-
tract on the commitment to em-
ploy her as star of "Tropic of
Cancer," a picture from the novel
by Henry Miller announced by
Joseph E. Levine but seemingly
shelved or abandoned. Miss Baker
claims a deal for seven films over
a seven-year period. Her damages
are entered for a cool $1,700,000.
Only "Harlow" has been com-
pleted under the long-term con-

Interfaith Peace Parley
to Draw 500 Clergymen

NEW YORK — Five hundred
clergymen and laymen from the
major faith groups in this country
will participate in the first Nation-
al Inter-Religious Conference on
Peace at the Sheraton-Park Hotel,
March 15-17 in Washington, D.C.
Convenors of the meeting ex-
pressed the hope that this gather-
ing will sharpen the numerous is-
sues concerning world peace and
help to mobilize the mainstream
of the religious institutions of
America behind effective programs
to achieve world peace.
The convocation plans were an-
nounced at a press conference at
the House of Living Judaism here
attended by the co-chairmen: Most
Reverend John J. Wright, Diocese
of Pittsburgh; Dr. Dana McLean
Greeley, Boston, president of the
Unitarian Universalist Association;
and Rabbi Maurice N. Eisendrath,
New York City, president of the
Union of American Hebrew Con-
gregations (Reform Judaism).
Discussions at the Washington
meeting will center around three
workshops for which special back-
ground papers are being prepared
by authorities in international af-
fairs. These include: "The Chang-
ing Communist World" — cover-
ing aspects of the evolving pattern
of communism, and an evaluation
of our relationship to it; "Com-
munist China and the Conflicts in
Asia" — the role that Communist
China plays with special analysis
of Vietnam, Korea and tensions in
India, Pakistan and Taiwan; and
"Forms of Intervention, Moral Re-
sponsibilities and Limits" — deal-
ing with such questions as the mor-
al justification for United States
intervention abroad and what
should the religious attitude and
approaches be in such cases.
