for Round of Vacation Activities

A total of 125 teen-agers from
18 communities in the United
States and Canada will attend the
Canadian Torah Leadership Sem-
inar sponsored by Yeshiva Uni-
versity through Dec. 28 at the
Carousel Motel in London, Ont.,
Rabbi Norman Tokayer, regional
representative of the University's
Youth Bureau and seminar coor-
dinator, announced.
Those who will participate in
the program include Rabbi James
Gordon, Young Israel of Oak
Woods, Rabbi Hayim Donin, Bnai
David, Southfield.

With public schools in the area
scheduled for winter recess next
week, the Jewish Center's youth
division plans a complete schedule
of activities for both tweens and
teens.
Center tweens and teen-agers
will be at the Vanguard Theater
Saturday evening for a perform-
ance of "Over the Counter." Later
(8 p.m. Thursday), the tweens will
present their own evening of satire
at a pre-New Year's Eve Dance.
A 3:30 p.m. Sunday hootenanny
is planned for teens at the Center,
and the tweens will have theirs 2
p.m. Jan. 2. Guitars and banjos
invited.

Israel Returns to Asian Games

Israel has been readmitted as a
member of the Asian Games. The
Israelis were barred from the
1962 Games, which were held in
Jakarta, when the Arab states put
pressure on the Indonesians. As a
result of that action by the Indo-
nesians, official sanction was with-
drawn from the 1962 Games. The
1964 Asian Games were held in
Bangkok, Thailand, in November.
It looks as if Israel will have to
brush up on its soccer. Two de-
feats by Belgium and Bulgaria
have eliminated them from World
Cup play. Both games were played

Israel Celebrates Hanukah
With Lighting, Parade

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Hanukah
celebrations w ere inaugurated
throughout the country Saturday
with the kindling of the traditional
menorahs on public buildings and
in the windows of most homes.
The traditional torchlight parade
of youth was held later in the
evening in the main streets of the
city.
Ceremonies opening the eight-
day festivities began with the dis-
play of the first light atop the
Knesset building here and with the
lighting of a candelabra on Israel's
Mount Scopus enclave which is en-
tirely surrounded by Jordanian oc-
cupied territory. The enclave is
manned by Israel police who guard
the original buildings of the He-
brew University and the Hadassah
Hospital.

Pride and Vanity
A little girl was asked to ex-
plain the difference between pride
and vanity. After considerable
thought, she replied: "Pride
means, 'I don't think much of
you'; vanity means 'What do you
think of me?"

Pierre Gilesgame of London,
chairman of the executive of the
World Maccabi Union and presi-

honored by the Helms Athletic
Foundation of Los Angeles.
A number of Israelis have re-
cently been honored by Helms for
their contributions to sport. They
are Dr. Robert Atlasz, Shmuel
Shumacher, Shalom Zysman, Josef
Inbar, Jehoshua Alouf, Hahn Wein,
Raphael Panon, Baruch Bagg and
Haim Glovinsky.
Jorge Telch of Mexico won a
bronze medal in the springboard
diving event at the "Little Olym-
pics" held in Mexico City.
Rita Morse of the Swim 'n Sun
Club captured seven events at the
Tennessee State Swimming Cham-
pionships. She recorded state and
Southeastern Association records
in six.
Veteran Larry Zeidel, hockey's
all-time wild man, is still playing
defense for the Cleveland Barons
at the age of 37.
Jeff Cohen is the goalie for Bos-
ton College, one of the nation's top
college hockey teams.

BBYO Parley Sunday

The annual convention of the
Michigan Region Bnai Brith Youth
Organization will take place at the
Jewish Center Sunday through
Thursday. Teen-agers will come
from 10 Michigan and Canadian
cities.

NEW YORK (JTA) — Awards
for proficiency in Hebrew were
presented last week to 133 stu-
dents in New York City high
schools and junior high schools in
the annual Hebrew Language con-
test.
More than 2,000 students in 55
city schools took part in the com-
petition for prizes provided by the
Free Sons of Israel, the Hebrew
Culture Council and the Jewish
Teachers Association.
The winners received the awards,
which included four top prizes
of $50 United States bonds, at the
office of the New York City Board
of Education. Seven scholarships
of $100 each also were awarded.
The scholarships are to be applied
to fees of the 1966 Israel Summer
Seminar which the seven winners
will attend.

Akiva Students to See
Films at Special Program

The award-winning film "The
Red Balloon," plus Hans Christian
Andersen's "The Steadfast Tin
Soldier" and "The Stamp," will be
shown at an afternoon of fun for
children of Akiva Hebrew Day
School 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the
Labor Zionist Institute.
Singing and refreshments will
complete the program. The public
is invited.

`Hanukah Hoe-Down'

The tween gourmet baking
guild will meet 10 a.m. to noon
Tuesday through Thursday to
prepare refreshments for the
Dec. 30 dance. Guild workers
will be admitted without charge r-
to the dance, which will feature
the music of Sam Barnett and
New Year's Eve favors.
On Wednesday afternoon, from
2 to 5 ,tweens of the area are in-
vited to a jam session, featuring
youth bands from throughout the
community. That same afternoon,
teens will be at the . Fisher Theater
watching Gwen Verdon in "Sweet
Charity." Tickets are available
through the Center's Youth Divi-
sion.
Teens will complete their vaca-
tion 3 p.m. Jan. 2 with their own
Teen Jam Session.
