followed his father, the state treas-
urer of Portugal, in the service
of King Alfonso V. When the next
king came to the throne, he ac-
cused Don Isaac of conspiracy, and
Abravanel was forced to flee.
He arrived penniless in Toledo,
Spain, with his wife and children,
but his abilites in finance were
soon recognized and he was made
court treasurer in 1490. When the
law expelling the Jews was an-
nounced, Don Isaac offered the
king 30,000 gold ducats in the hope
that the decree would be repeal-
ed.
Abravanel's talents were ex-
tremely useful, and he was offered
the right to remain. But he refused,
and when his gift was rejected,
Don Isaac joined the cavalcade of
refugees.
His next stop was in Naples,
where he was called into the

Dr. Epstein's accompanying ex-
planatory essay on Isaac Abrara-
nel follows:
The Inquisition, first set up in
1248, gradually brought black night
to the Golden Age of Jewry in
Spain. Through special courts in
charge of discovering and punish-
ing those who offended Christian-
ity, the Inquisition slowly destroy-
ed the Jewish community. The
final moment came when the monk
Thomas de Torquemada influenced
Queen Isabella and King Ferdi-
nand to expel the Jews from Spain.
Among those who marched on
that bitter day in 1492 was Don
Isaac Abravanel. He had chosen to
flee with his people rather than ac-
cept personal exemption.
Last of the great figures of the
Golden Age, Isaac was born in
1437 to a family that traced its
descent back to King David. Isaac
