Leo W. Schwarz's Vastly Enriched New Edition
of 'The Jewish Caravan' Contains Jewish Lore
of 2,500 Centuries, With Valuable Additions

Leo W. Schwarz, the eminent
author of several anthologies, de-
servedly receives acclaim for the
republication of one of his out-
standing classics.
When "The Jewish Caravan"
first appeared 30 years ago, it be-
came at once one
of the most valu-
able guides to
"Great Stories of
2 5 Centuries,"1:
the book's sub-1
title.
Holt, Rinehart
and Winston has
just republished
it, in a revised
and greatly en- Schwarz
larged edition. The book had 14
previous printings. Now, in its new
form, it contains, in addition to
the original contents:

In English for the first time, the
works of two Yiddish postwar
writers — "Two Trees" by Mendel
Mann and "Dialogue with the Dead"

by Mordecai Strigler; Franz Kafka's
story, "Before the Law;" selections
from the works of American authors
—Howard Fast, Maurice Samuel,
Charles Angoff, Edward L. Wallant,
Bernard Malamud, Isaac Bashevis
Singer, Charles Reznikoff; the Amer-
ican author Avram Davidson's sci-
ence fiction story "The Golem;"
stories by the Israelis, Ephraim
Kishon, Aharon Megged, Yehuda
Amihai and Gershon Shufman; a sec-
tion dealing with the Nazi horrors
and the survivors, including stories
by Louis Falstein, Andre Schwarz-
Bart, Isaiah Spiegel, Mordecai Strig-
ler, M. J. Feigenbaum, Wladka Meed.

Classical writings on Jews, Jew-
ry, Judaism, by writers in many
languages, are included in this
monumental work. Talmud, Bible
and Apocrypha; Hassidic writings
and selections from the Agada;
quotations from Bialik, Buber,
Peretz, Sholem Aleichem, Nahman
of Bratzlav and many scores of
others are part of this work.
Thus, as Schwarz himself states,
"the Jewish personality" is re-
flected in this work. His scholarly
introduction assists students in be-
