Holiday Greetings

In the first years after the emer-
gence of the state there were new-
comers who left their villages. They
said: "We don't want to live at the
end of the world." "There is no
doctor, no high school, no theatre,
no fun, no films, only work and
food."
The people who were engaged in
planning settlements listened at-
tentively to these sentiments and
tried to set up agricultural settle-
ments where the people would feel
at home. They found a solution: to
set up a number of villages around
a rural centre: which could provide
the settlers with amenities on as
high a level as in the town: educa-
tion, health, culture, social life,
economic institutions such as work-
shops and various industrial enter-
prises.
Ten years ago they began to build
on this system the Lachich region
(situated near the Jordan border).
In the region there were at the
beginning about 30 settlements.
There are now 60 settlements.
Today some 16,000 residents live
in the region earning their liveli-
hood from agriculture and in addi-
tion to them thousands of residents
living on industry, commerce and
services. Many of the village houses
today resemble the villas of wealthy
people and why not? The country
dwellers earn well. They grow cotton,
ground nuts, beet sugar and veget-
ables. They have cowsheds and flocks
of sheep. Some villagers grow flow-
ers for export. In the rural centres
there are doctors, cultural centres
and libraries.
The settlers are satisfied. Many
are ready to come and settle in the
area. There are farmers ready to
pay IL 15 — 30,000 for a farm, but
who is mad enough to sell?
