Former 'Hopeless' Celebrate Hanukah Eshkol to Present Government on 27th, Reigious Party Adamant

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

Spiritual renewal symbolized in lighting of the Hanukah can-
dles is observed by formerly "hopeless" Pat Massel, 11, St. Peters-
burg, Fla., and Sue Schuman, 9, Los Angeles, now on the road to
health at the free-treatment Jewish National Home for Asthmatic
Children (also known as CARIH) at Denver. After a general stay of
two years at JNHAC-CARIH, most children return home in good
health to bright futures. Mrs. David Cooper, 18105 Fairfield, is presi-
dent of JNHAC-CARIH's Detroit Council of Presidents.

TEL AVIV—Prime Minister Levi
Eshkol, who has been conducting
cabinet negotiations from his room
in Hadassah Hospital, plans to pre-
sent a new government to parlia-
ment Dec. 27, it was indicated
Tuesday.
The Premier was hospitalized
Dec. 4 for rest and observation re-
portedly stemming from the stren-
uous election campaign which end-
ed Nov. 2 with a resounding vic-
tory for his Mapai-Ahdut Avodah
slate.
The Premier, who expected to
leave the hospital this weekend,
will not, however, deliver the pro-
gramatic speech normally present-
ed by a premier to parliament in
offering a new coalition. The
speech will be printed and given to
each member of parliament in-
stead.
The Premier told newsmen
jokingly that his presence in the
hospital was a "fine" for not tak-
ing a vacation rest four weeks
ago at the close of the campaign.

religious demands were insuf-
ficient and did not offer a basis
for its participation in the new
cabinet.
Eshkol indicated he would im-
mediately resume an active role
in those negotiations.
The National Religious Party
negotiations demanded that work
be stopped on Saturdays at the
new port of Ashdod when other
ports were in operation and re-
newed their demand for a national
Sabbath law, a measure which
died in the • fifth parliament.
However. the leftist Mapam and
the Independent Liberal Party in-
formed alignment negotiations
that the concessions to the relig-
ious bloc had gone too far and
would upset the status quo which
has been the basis of all coalition
platforms until now.
The opposing positions on the
religious issues were reported to

the Premier in the hospital by
Mrs. Golda Men-, Israel's foreign
minister, who has participated in
the cabinet negotiations. The Pre-
mier was begun putting in a few
hours of work daily in his suite
at Hadassah Hospital. Callers
have included Gen. Yitzhak Rabin,
chief of staff, who reported on
Israel's security situation.
