Probe Rheumatic Fever Cause in Israel Study WASHINGTON — The young of Israel are helping medical science probe the cause of rheumatic fever —usual forerunner of rheumatic heart disease. Some 375 children, ages 2 to 14, from four agricultural settlements (kibbutzim), in the hills of Judea near the medical school in Jerusa- lem, are participating in the study. Sponsored by the U.S. Public Health Service's Heart Disease Control Program, the study seeks to determine the immediate cause of rheumatic fever which is un- known. When rheumatic fever strikes, it usually follows nose and throat infections caused by a germ of the streptococcus family. The three-year study began late in 1964 and is under the direction of Dr. A. Michael Davies, head of the department of ecology, He- brew University Hadassah Medi- cal School, Jerusalem. ~ Some hearing loss problems are not helped by a hearing aid.
