Joseph Ross Receives 'Liberty' Award
United Jewish Charities Achievements Epps-Sidlow Vows
In tribute to Joseph Ross, the for "Labor" and Mrs. Russ ell
of the Year Told at Annual Meeting to Be Spoken in August executive committee of the Detroit Broadhead for "Learning."
•
At the 66th annual meeting of
the United Jewish Charities, direc-
tors were elected and past achieve-
ments and new prospects were re-
viewed by Erwin S. Simon, presi-
dent.
Re-elected as director were
Jacob Citrin, Avern L. Cohn, Mrs.
Joseph H. Ehrlich, Simon, Milton
J. Miller and James Wineman.
Judge Theodore Levin, was chair-
man of the nominating committee.
Simon asserted that the Charities
accepted the responsibility of pro-
viding reserve resources to assure
a progressive forward movement
for our community and its agencies,
and that programs to achieve these
ends are now being carried out.
The endowment program this
year was the recipient of $80,000
in new trust funds and $60,000
in new insurance policies and six
bequests. The program, conceived
in 1957, is under the chairmanship
of Milton J. Miller.
Simon reviewed the work of the
committee on Jewish scholarship
service, a specialized part of the
endowment fund program. $2,555
was disbursed for new scholarship
loans from this fund last year in
addition to grants totaling $1,150
from the general funds of the UJC.
The committee is under the chair-
manship of Samuel S. Greenberg.
The work of the Jewish Commu-
nity Foundation, established 19
months ago, is under the chairman-
ship of Max J. Zivian. Designed as
a resource for extra-budgetary
programs related to the general
health, welfare, education, culture
and community relations objectives
of Federation, it is financed by
an annual grant of up to 50 per cent
of the unrestricted earnings real-
ized from gifts, legacies, trusts and
other assets of the Charities.
Grants from the foundation total-
ing $36,125 were made to five
agencies last year. They included
such varied projects as a Jewish
population study, in-service train-
ing programs, and teacher prepara-
tion.
Simons mentioned an advance
of nearly $700,000 to fulfull im-
mediate cash obligations of the
newly completed unit of the Jewish
Home for Aged.
Aid for Religious Schools
The Conference on Jewish Ma-
terial Claims Against Germany last
year allocated a total of $187,400
for yeshivot and rabbinical re-
search programs in various coun-
tries.
