Ilashomer Hatzair Calls for End to Vietnam Bombing
" NEW YORK — A resolution de-
manding an immediate end to the
American bombing of North Viet-
nam and an immediate cease fire
in that country was adopted Dec.
3 by the Americans for Progressive
Israel-Hashomer Hatzair.
The group, at its convention at
the Belmont Plaza Hotel, called for
an end to the war and for mean-
ingful negotiations leading to the
early withdrawal of American
forces so that both North and South
Vietnamese people "may begin to
fashion their own destiny."
This Zionist group, which is a
constituent member of the Amer-
ican Zionist Council and of the
American Section of the World
Jewish Congress, also said it de-
plored the "apparently deliberate
refusal of Washington to respond
to . peace feelers in the past." The
resolution urged a "halt to the
liarrassment of the dissidents from
American foreign policy!'
The time has come to "create
a favorable atmosphere" for Is-
rael-Arab talks, both within Is-
rael and in other countries, es-
pecially those where there are
large Arab populations, as in
South America, Dr. Nahum Gold-
man, president of the World
Zionist Organization, declared
at the annual Hanukah dinner
of Americans for Progressive Is-
rael-Hashomer Hatzair, which
concluded t h e organization's
three-day convention. The na-
tional chairman of the organiza-
tion, Avraham Schenker, a mem-
ber of the Jewish Agency
Executive, presided.
Dr. Goldmann declared that
there is the danger that the con-
flict in the Middle East may de-
velop into an Arab-Jewish as - well
as Arab-Israel strife which "would
be disastrous." The encounter be-
tween Arabs and Jews throughout
history has been "one of the most
creative, peaceful" ones in the his-
tory of the Jewish people. It would
thus be a" "denial Of the Jewish
past" and a violation of the tradi-
tional friendship between the two
peoples if a violent conflict should
develop between them, and if the
Arabs should go into the forefront
of neo-Nazi movements, he said.
Sen. Ribicoff in Israel to Study Use of U.S. Aid
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Sen.
Abraham A. Ribicoff, Connecticut
Democrat, arrived in Israel Sun-
day for a 10-day visit. He said the
official part of his visit was con-
nected with a study of the aid
which Israel receives from the
United States and the assistance
Israel provides to developing coun-
tries.
The senator will meet with
Premier Levi Eghkol, Foreign
Minister Golda Meir, Chief of Staff
Gen. Yitzhak Rabin and leading
ecbnomists. "There are things
which the United States can learn
from Israel which have found ways
to the hearts of African states and
gives Africans aid efficiently," he
said, adding that personally he
was interested in education and
welfare problems in Israel.
2 Groups Defend
S. American Work
NEW YORK (JTA) — The Amer-
ican Jewish Committee and Bnai
Brith defended their programs in
South American communities
against complaints from Argentine
Jewish_ leaders that they had not
been consulted before the programs
were initiated.
The complaints were made
known by spokesmen for Argen-
tina's two major Jewish organiza-
tions, the DATA, the central repre-
sentative body of Argentine Jewry,
and the Kehilla.
Dr. William A. Wexler, Bnai
Brith president, said the Bnai
Brith program for Latin Amer-
Ica had been initiated at the
request of the Latin American
district of Bnai Brith. Bnai
Brith has constituents in 15
Latin American countries, he
stressed.
Morris B. Abram, American Jew-
ish Committee president, said the
organization's program in Latin
America was started in 1948 "at
the request of community leaders
in Argentina, who sought assist-
ance and know-how to help meet
pressing problems." He added the
program had been preceded by
"careful study of the challenges
and potential areas of action."
Abram called the criticism
directed against his organization
"particularly surprising" . in view
of the." fact that DATA officers
wrote to him on Aug. 27, 1984,
after a .three-week trip- by a Com-
mittee delegation which he headed
in four South American countries,
in which the DAIA offered "warm-
est congratulations."
Abram also said that on Nov.
16 he received a letter from of-
ficers of the Zionist Federation of
Chile on the first anniversary of
cooperation between the Commit-
tee and the Federation. The of-
ficers said in the letter that they
wished to take the occasion "to
extend our sincere thanks for the
interest and valuable help, both
material and scientific, which the
American Jewish Committee has
given us during this period."
The American Jewish Congress
issued a statement declaring that
it believes that "each Jewish com-
munity in the world has the right
and responsibility to work out its
own destiny."
