Britisher Gets Five Years for Setting Fire to Synagogue LONDON (JTA) — Aubrey Desmond Cadogan, 39, formerly the managing director of a tailor- ing firm here owned by Jews, who reportedly told police that his mother was Jewish, was convicted in Old Bailey of having set fire to a synagogue and sentenced to five years' imprisonment. While he had pleaded not guilty, the court found that, on July 9, he had broken into the Palmers Green and Southgate District Synagogue, in London, and had set fire to it. Police witnesses had testified that, immediately after the fire had started, they had found him carrying an oil can near the synagogue. The prosecution also charged that, in Cadogan's home, police found considerable quantities of Nazi literature; including a copy of a book entitled "Hilter Was Right." One detective quoted the man as saying after his ar- rest that his mother was Jewish and insisting: "So, I'm not like- ly to do a thing like that, am I?" Cadogan continued to insist be- fore the court that he was in- nocent of the charge and, after the sentence, called it "a travesty of justice." But Judge Mervyn- Griffith Jones, who presided at the jury trial in Old Bailey — which is London's C e n t r al Criminal Court — told him: "I put out of my mind what un- doubtedly appeared to be your political views. I deal with case simply on the basis that you have committed the offence of which you have been convicted, coupled with the fact that, in setting fire to the contents of that synagogue, you must have had it in mind to burn down the synagogue as a whole." "This," the judge continued, "was a deliberate act and not only wicked in itself but one which might have caused danger and loss to surrounding buildings. It con- stitutes conduct which, in a civil- ized state, simply cannot be tolerated." Detective Inspector George Claiden told the court, during the trail, that the arson committeed at synagogues in north- west London "had been of great concern" to police authorities. DIPLOMATIC NOTES: When West German Chancellor Erhard comes to the United States for consultations with President Johnson, he will be faced with two Jewish questions . . . First, why is the Bonn government reneging on the decision of the German Parliament to pay in 1966 $50,000,000 to Nazi victims who could not file application for in- BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR NEW BUICK demnification before October 1953, because they were in countries be- hind the Iron Curtain? . . . Second, why is the Bonn government failing SEE to act on its promise to start financial talks with Israel after Germany and Israel establish diplomatic relations? . . Both questions are of major interest to American Jewry . . . It took the leaders of the Con- ference on Jewish Materials Claims Against Germany many months AT of negotiations with Bonn before securing compensation for the post- 1953 claimants as Nazi victims . . . American Jews also watched with satisfaction the exchange of letters between Chancellor Erhard and BR 2-2550 17500 GRAND RIVER Israel's Premier Levi Eshkol last May, in which the former spoke of a 2 Blocks East of Southfield "special relationship" between West Germany and Israel . . . The pre- cise nature of the "special relationship" was thoroughly defined in dis- cussions between the Chancellor's special envoy, Herr Birrenbach, and Israeli leaders . . . Now indications in the West German press point to the possibility that the Erhard government is inclined to seek excuses from its pledges to Israel, claiming budgetary difficulties . . . The same excuse of "budgetary difficulties" has also been given by West German Finance Minister Rolf Dahlgruen when he announced last month that the first payment of $50,000,000 compensation to the post-1953 claimants will not be made in 1966, and would be "deferred for one year" ... Ex- perts in this country who are watching West Germany's financial situa- tion see no basis for these excuses ... They consider Germany's econo- mic situatiim as prosperous this year as in any of the previous years, and they say so to interested American Jewish leaders ...Is there any • Oak Park Councilman - Elected other reason why the Bonn Government is seeking to evade its obliga- 1961 - Re-Elected 1965 tions to Israel and to thousands of Jewish victims of Nazism? ..
