1960 `Conspiraey'Against Him Charged by lieniwGiutrion JERUSALEM (JTA)—Former Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, who had formed Raft, his own israel Workers List, which won 10 Knesset seats in the elections, charged that his former colleagues among the veteran leaders of Mapai had "conspired" against him as far back as 1960 to oust him from the post of Premier, which he held at the time. r He made that accusation in the preface to a new book, "Things As They Really Were." The book, which he authored, deals with the old Lavon Affair and with the events that led up to the split within Mapai which led to the formation of Rafi. At a meeting of his Rafi adherents, Ben-Gurion said last weekend that, with the publication of this volume, he would regard his participation in those events as having been ended. The victims involved are mostly Jews who could not file their claims for compensation with the German authorities before Octo- ber 1953 because they lived in the Soviet Union and other countries behind the Iron Curtain. The West German Parliament decided several months ago to grant them compensation and to make the first payment of $50,000,000 in 1966. West German Finance Minister Rolf Dahlgruen now claims that the payment cannot be made because of "budgetary difficulties." "This is an immoral attempt with regard to the obligations of the West German government to the Nazi victims," Dr. Goldmann said. He pointed out that the affected Nazi victims have already been waiting 20 years for compensation. Postponement of payment, he pointed out, could have serious implications for older claimants who might not live to see any compensation. He also criticized the Bonn government for evading to enter negotiations with Israel about German economic aid to the Jewish state. Dr. Goldmann voiced his criticism in an address he delivered Nov. 24 at a dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel marking the 20th • `nmversary of the liberation of the Jews from the Nazi concentra- m camp in Bergen Belsen. More than 1,000 persons attended the inner at which Brig. General H. L. Glyn Hughes, known as "the liberator of Bergen Belsen" because of the major role he played in bringing freedom to the camp inmates, was honored. Dr. Goldmann said that coming generations of Jews must always remember the Nazi holocaust and that "the Germans must always be reminded" about it. General Hughes appealed to the world "never to forget" the crimes of the Nazi regime. The Nazi concentration and annihilation camps were "the worst horror story of the war," he said. The dinner was arranged by the World Federation of the Ber- gen Belsen Associations and was presided over by Josef Rosen- saft, president of the Federation. A Nazi rally near the Capitol building displayed a huge banner reading "Stand Up for Our Boys in Viet Nam" and featured anti-Semitic __speakers, some claiming to be ex-service men. One ex-Marine denounced the "hook-nosed Zionist Jews" as "peace creeps." Attention was called by speakers to the participation of some Jews in the anti-war demonstration. It was pointed out that Sanford Gottlieb, a Jew, was coordinator of the March and that some rabbis participated. Nazi leader George Rockwell was arrested on disorderly conduct charges as were a num- ber of his "storm troopers." Mark L. Garfinkel, 24, of Philadelphia, was arrested after alter- cations with the Nazis, as were a number of other Jews and non Jews. The arrested numbered 15. All were charged with disorderly conduct and released after posting collateral. The anti-peace display included the blaring of racist songs over a loudspeaker system and harangues by Rockwell, his followers, and spokesmen for the Ku Klux Klan and the Hell's Angels motorcycle club. A small number of men in military uniforms attended the Nazi rally. It attracted several hundred spectators, most of whom appeared shocked by the display of a huge swastika and flagrant anti-Semitism and racism. (The Vietnam march was endorsed in Detroit by church and synagogue spokesmen, in- cluding Rabbis Mordecai Halpern, Richard C. Hertz and Morris Adler). The sacrifices of the United States military personnel in Vietnam have motivated a fly- ing visit to the battlefront by leaders of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America, to convey to U.S. servicemen "the knowledge that Jews, along with Americans of other faiths, support United States action and involvement in the Vietnamese conflict," a JWV statement announced this week. The fact that the American Jewish community at large and Jewish veterans of previ- ous wars are behind the fighting men will be transmitted to personnel of all faiths in Viet- nam by a delegation representing the Jewish War Veterans, headed by National Comman Milton A. Waldor of Newark, N.J. and will include National Executive Director Monroe R. Sheinberg. It will be in Vietnam until Monday, and will meet with Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr.; General William Westmoreland, commander of U.S. forces; and other top- ranking officials. Commander Waldor recalls that the JWV has consistently backed administration ef- forts to block the Communist expansion in Southeast Asia. The Jewish War Veterans, at its national convention in August 1964, unanimously resolved: "That the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. supports U.S. commitment to Vietna- mese independence and freedom as an integral link in the free world security system, and "That the Jewish War Veterans endorses the action of President Johnson in ordering the attack on the North Vietnamese 'hive' as the source of the Communist assault boats, and as a necessary and proper response to irresponsible provocation." ,World Jewish Congress Pleads With U.S. to Ratify! Genocide Pact Prof. Chain, Nobel Prize Winner, Stresses Need for Extended Jewish Education for Youth NEW YORK—A plea to the United States government to ratify the United Nations genocide convention was made in a resolution adopted at a meeting here Tuesday evening sponsored by the American Section of the World Jewish Congress. The resolu- tion noted that the United States remains the only major power that has not acceded to the convention although it has been before the United States Senate since 1949. Speakers at the meeting urging U.S. action on the convention included Rep. James Scheuer, New York Democrat; Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Jewish Congress; and Dr. Max Nussbaum, chairman of the WJC American Section. In a message to the meeting, Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller said that Nazi mass murder of Jewry had constituted "the most hideous chapter in the history of the world, a history with many ugly interludes." Gov. Rockefeller said that steps should be taken "to make certain that it cannot happen again." In urging the U.S. government and Senate to accede to the convention, the resolu- tion declared "we deeply believe that in order to keep our position of moral leadership in the world, the U.S. must play a pioneer role in the promotion of international and national legislation designed to uproot the evil manifestations of prejudice, discrimina- tion and persecution of human groups among which genocide is certainly the most monstrous." LONDON—Western Jews must face the problem • of how to teach their children to remain Jewish in a non-Jewish environment, Prof. Boris Chain, Nobel Prize winner and co-discoverer of penicillin, told the Zionist Educational Trust here Tuesday night 7 gar7.1 "7: at its annual dinner. Dr. Chain said his own advice for dealing with this problem would be to make Jewish children conscious of the fact that for reasons beyond their control they belonged to an ancient people with great traditions of which they should be proud. Jewish children, he said, should also be made aware of the stress placed by Judaism on human dignity and should be taught to be ready to uphold this precious ideal both as Jews and as citizens. He stressed the importance of teaching children to read Hebrew so that they could read the Bible in the original and converse in Hebrew when they reached Israel. Announcement was made at the dinner that the Zionist Dr. Chain Federation of Great Britain and Ireland through the trust now maintains 10 schools with 2,900 pupils and 151 teachers. Hebrew, it was pointed out, was taught along with the general educational curriculum. The Zionist day school program was launched here 13 years ago. (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News)
