Voluminous 'Encyclopedia of Jews in Sports' Lists Many Detroiters Active in Athletics I • Imb "Encyclopedia of Jews in Sports," published by Bloch, com- piled by three well-informed men who have labored to gather basic data abOut every conceivable sports activity, fills an important need and provides valuable informa- tion. Bernard Postal, well known in the Jewish literary field, and Jesse and Roy Silver, both of whom have been writing sports columns for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency for use by the English-Jewish press, including The Detroit Jewish News, combined their skills to gather the data about many hun- dreds of Jews in all conceivable fields of athletics. In a foreword to this volum- inous work, U.S. Senator Abra- ham Ribicoff demolishes a myth about Jews being weaklings. He states: "This encyclopedia fills a necessary gap. One finds little_ in most Jewish sources about the role of Jews in athletics. Understandably, these have em- phasized heroes of the spirit—. intellectual giants. So many Jews have the impression that we are comoartive stangers in sports. And non-Jews have accepted the myth, or stereotype, that we are physical weaklings — nimble in the head, perhaps, but not too nimble with the feet. Here we have the real record—and it proves the myth wrong once and for all." It is not modern sports alone that helps disprove the myth. This encyclopedia includes a very illum- inating chapter on sports in Tal- mudic literature. The brief history that precedes the record of Jews in the vast variety of sports ex- plains the long tradition of Jewish activity in athletics. It includes that in the Bible physical strength was considered an attribute.. It points to the organized system of Hebrew speedsters in the 11th cen- tury before the present - era, and especially mentions Ahimez, son of High Oriest Zadok, and Asahel, nephew of King David, as long- distance runners. Dedicating the volume to Dr. Max Nordau, Theodore Herzel's right-hand associate in creating World Jewry Raises Sum to Keren Hayesod • the modern Zionist movement, the volume quotes Nordau's famous statement: "We must create again a strong, muscular Judaism." The brief history is repete with facts that will be found of great interest especially by lovers of sports and by the youth. There is facination in the list of sports included in this ency- clopedia as counting Jews as par- ticipants. Not only baseball, foot- ball, basketball, auto racing, box- of Michigan teams. And there is Mervin Pregulman, who played tackle for Michigan State and later was in professional football. Byron Krieger is listed in foils. Samuel Stoller was famed in sprints for the University of Mich- igan, having gone in 1936 to the Olympics. Made it to the Top ? Great! Lend us your talent! So much material was gathered, such a wide field had to be cov- ered, that some were overlooked. Thus, Herman Fishman should have been metioned in basketball and baseball, at the University of Michigan. Ruge Young played pro- fessional football. Louis Handle- man was active in boxing and later as a referee. Cincy Sachs certain- ly deserves mention in basketball. Of course, Sandy Koufax and other greats in baseball are fea- tured, as well as those in other sports.
