Wayne State University has al-
ready received $250,000 as part of
a $500,000 gift from the Shiffman
Foundation to build an ultramod-
ern medical library at Wayne
State University.
Although a n -
nouncement had
not formally
been made, news
of the latest gift
by Detroit phi-
lanthropist Abra-
ham Shiffm an
leaked out last
weekend.
Ground break-
ing for the $2,-
500,000 facility
Shiffman
will take place in
the medical complex near Grace
and Harper hospitals.
In an interview with the Free
Press, Shiffman, 75, said his
philanthropies, managed through
the family-run Shiffman Founda-
tion, had been "a dream for
many years." He credited his
parents, Moses and Sarah Shiff-
man, with the family's philan-
thropic spirit. The foundation is
now 14 years old and has con-
tributed $4,000,000 to local and
Israeli causes, among them a
high school for immigrant chil-
dren -in Tirat HaCarmel outside
Haifa.
Shiffman told the Free Press in-
terviewer, Jean Sharley, "A lot of
people in this town have got
money, but they don't know how
to let go. Actually they haven't got
it, it's got them. They spend all
their time guarding it."
He said private contributors, not
government, have the responsibil-
ity in matters of education and
health. This is his conception of
'`good citizenship," Shiffman said.
