Alvin Kushner, community af- fairs associate of the Jewish Com- munity Council, was answering an attack on Jewish community lead- ership for its "failure to take a forthright stand," as one member of the audience charged. The meet- ing took place at the Esther Ber- man Building of the United He- brew Schools. The Parent-Teachers Organi- zation at Esther Berman spon- sored the program to focus at- tention -on the mounting problem of a changing neighborhood. When one listener complained that the rabbis aren't telling their congregations to stay in the area, another piped up: "The rabbis are moving too." Kushner retorted: "The rabbi doesn't move; the synagogue doesn't move. The con- gregation moves . . . If you tell us what you want us (the Council) to do, we'll do it." Bertrand Sandweiss, assistant principal of Mumford High School, who shared the speaker's stand with Kushner, was in agreement: "A school is the reflection of the community. Perhaps we can give some direction, but we can't take responsibility for everything that happens." Sandweiss praised the quality of education at Mumford and added that "if quality integrated education is possible anywhere, it is in this community." He pointed out that the people who are moving into the area are "fine, substantial people . . . looking for a better life." Safety and discipline are not problems at Mumford, Sandweiss said. There is a foot patrolman on the school grounds who has suc- cessfully eliminated the non-stu- dent loiterers, "and the normal school problems of discipline are under control." The worst prob- lem, Sandweiss added, "is rumors that have no foundation in fact." He cited the Mumford Action Program and Parents Club as "an effective group, biracial, with tre- mendous leadership." A member of the audience, a Negro, spoke up, "We have some good leaders—Negro and white— and we must work together. There's no point in running. We all have a responsibility to each other."
