`Catholic Who Denounces Jews by Citing From the
Bible Will Be Heretic,' Prominent Jesuit Declares

NEW YORK (JTA)—The re-
cently promulgated Catholic church
doctrine, repudiating the ancient
charge that the Jews are collec-
tively guilty of the death of Jesus,
is "irreversible" because, from
now on, it is a "doctrinal" state-
ment, the Rev. Walter M. Abbott,
a prominent American Jesuit, de-
clared here in a lecture.

UHS Superintendent
to Speak at Institute

Albert Elazar, superintendent of
the United Hebrew Schools, will be
guest speaker at Beth Aaron's
Adult Institute 8:15 p.m. Tuesday
at the synagogue.
Elazar's subject, humanism of
the Bible, is the fourth In the
series on "Great Jews and Jewish
Ideas of the Modern Age," general
theme of this year's Institute.
Elazar's lecture will be preceded
by a hall-hour "Eternal Light"
kinescope, "The Psychology of the
Bible", which will feature as par-
ticipants Maurice Samuel and
Mark Van Doren, two literary per-
sonalities in Jewish and world
literature.
The lecture and kinescope are
open to the general public.

Rabbi Eulogizes Kennedy
at Service; LBJ Attends

JOHNSON CITY, Tex. (JTA)—
Rabbi Judah Fish, of Austin,
speaking at memorial services for
the late President Kennedy at-
tended by President Lyndon B.
Johnson Monday said the nation
could be thankful for the gift of
Kennedy. The rabbi told the inter-
faith service that "we pray that
the causeless hatred which killed
him will vanish from this earth."

Elliott Roosevelt to Be
at Temple Israel's
Israel Bond Dinner

Elliott Roosevelt, mayor of Mia-
mi Beach, will be the guest speaker
at the Temple Israel dinner 6:30
p.m. Dec. 5, for Israel Bonds.
The dinner, a highlight of Tem-
ple Israel's 25th anniversary year,
will honor the past presidents and
the incumbent president.
Lew Norman will be the guest
star.
Nathaniel H. Goldstick is the
dinner chairman. Participants on
the program will include Dr. Leon
Fram, Rabbi M. Robert Syme and
Cantor Harold Orbach.
The second son of Franklin De-
lano Roosevelt and Eleanor Roose-
velt, Elliott Roosevelt served as an
aide to his father at the Big Three
Conferences in Casablanca, Tehe-
ran and Yalta.
In 1940, he resigned as head of
the Texas State Radio Network to
enlist in the armed forces. He flew
89 missions as a reconnaissance
pilot and rose to the command of
all reconnaissance units of the
Allies, under the command of Gen.
Eisenhower. When he retired from
the service in 1946, he held the
rank of brigadier general. He ed-
ited and published in four volumes
the complete collection of the per-
sonal letters of FDR. He also wrote
a book, "As He Saw It", an ac-
count of the Big Three conferences.
He received two distiguished fly-
ing crosses and 12 air medals
and was decorated by Britain and
France.

Father Abbott, associate editor
of America, Jesuit weekly, said
that the statement regarding rela_
tions between the Catholic church
and the Jewish religion cannot be
undone in the future because it
calls for "teaching" of the new doc-
trine. Hereafter, he declared, any
Catholic who uses biblical phrases
to denounce the Jews as deicides
or as an accursed people will be

fifth annual Hanukah Concert 8:30
p.m., Dec. 18, it was announced
by Dr. Maurice Silverman, chair-
man. The concert will be under
the direction of Cantor Hyman J.
