Weizmann Institute
Gets Largest Gift

REHOVOTH, Israel — Probably
the largest single contribution to
a local institution of higher learn-
ing and research ever made by
living donors in Israel has been
announced by the Weizmann In-
stitute of Science.
According to Meyer W. Weisgal,
chairman of the executive council,
the Federmann Family Founda-
tion of Israel is donating the
amount of 500,000 pounds ($166,-
667) over the next five years to
the institute's endowment fund.
Yekutiel Federmann, of Haifa,
head of the Federmann Enterprises
Ltd., expressed the hope that other
residents of Israel would emulate
this example of contributing to an
institution's endowment fund, "in-
stead of financing another edifice
on some campus so that their
names might be given to it."

engaged in underwater research

work in unraveling the mysteries
of the ocean and to one day allow
man to comfortably reside beneath
the ocean's waves.
Such a philosophy and scientific
clue is presented in Yeshiva Uni-
versity's "Judaism as a Philoso-
phy," a special publication which
commemorates the 900th anniver-
sary of the birth of Abraham Bar
Hiyya, an 11th Century Jewish
Aristotelian who appears to be the
first to ever de v is e a lineless
sounding device to measure the
ocean depths.

According to Dr. Leon D. Stit-
skin, professor of Jewish philo-
sophy at Yeshiva University's
Bernard Revel Graduate School
and editor of the book, the im-
portance of the work of Bar

Hiyya (also known as Savasorda)
was revealed when a research
scientist from the Smithsonian
Institution contacted Dr. Stit-

sonian Institution about lineless
sounding devices for measuring
the depth of oceans where the
water is too deep for such mea-
surements to be made with con-
ventional sounding lines.
Dr. Stitskin points out that Bar
Hiyya's s o u n ding device is a
round, ball-shaped hollow mass of
copper or lead with as thin a wall
as possible. It is attached to an
iron form of extra weight which

Aden's 7,000 Jews
Decline to 400

The Jewish community of Aden
which numbered about 7,000 in
1947 is now down to about 400, the
World Jewish Congress was in-
formed by Bentob Messa, leader of
the Aden Jewish community.
Messa reported that the decrease
in the Aden community's numbers
had begun with the attacks on
Aden Jewry at the time of the
establishment of the State of Isra-
el. Since then several thousand
members of the community have
emigrated, a few to the United
States, some to Ethiopia, many to
Britain, and the major part to
Israel.
Despite the exodus, the com-
munity still maintains four syna-
gogues and other communal facil-
ities under the supervision of a
local council of which Messa is the
president.
Most of the community are retail-
ers and sales representatives but
a few are professionals or civil

Servants.

Messa said that the recent in-
cident involving the setting aflame
of one of the community syna-
gogues was part of the terrorism
instigated by Arab nationalist ele-
ments who did not discriminate be-
tween minority groups such as the
Jewish, Indian, Pakistani, or Som-
ali.
