Joys for Children Brought Via UNICEF Five Eelected to Canadian Parliament

OTTAWA (JTA) — Five Jews
were elected to the Canadian
Parliament in the general elections
of last week, final vote results
showed. This is the same number
of Jewish deputies who sat in the
previous parliament. "
Four of the Jewish deputies were
reelected, and the fifth, David
Lewis, regained the seat he had
lost to Marvin Gelber in the 1963
general elections. The four re-
elected deputies are Milton Klein,
a Liberal, of Montreal; Max Salts-
man, NDP, of Waterloo South;
Herb Gray, Liberal, of Essex
South; and David Orlikow, NDP,
of Winnipeg North.

Gary Gubner of New York won
the silver medal in the heavy-
weight division of the world
weightlifting championships which
were held in Teheran, Iran. The
Olympic champion, a Russan, won
the competition. Gubner lifted 1,-
199 pounds the best ever by an
American. He lost by 16 1/2 pounds.
Tom Okker , the 21-year-old
Maccabiah Games singles cham-
pion from the Netherlands, is cam-
paigning in Australia. He scored
his first big win in the Queens-
land Lawn Tennis championships
with an upset win over the fourth
seeded Australian player by the
score of 6-4, 13-15, 6-3, 4-6, 9-7.
The match lasted three hours and
left both players on the verge of
collapse.
Golfer Andrea Cohn won $317 at
the Las Cruces, N.M., Ladies Open
when she shot 224 for 54 holes at
the par 72 Las Cruces Country
Club.
Bill Morgan of San Francisco
represented this country at the
Little Olympics in Mexico City.
Morgan finished fourth in the 10,-
000-meter run in 32:23.6 . . . Dan
Rosen and Bruce Selman are a
promising pair of freshmen run-
ning cross country for New York
University. Rosen, who ran at the
Maccabiah Games, is a half-miler,
while Selman, the N.Y. Public
School Athletic League champion,
runs the mile . . . Bennett Flax of
Columbia U. is having a fine cross
country season. He is unbeated in
dual meet competition . . . Abe
Assa of C.C.N.Y. is also running
well.
Handball champ Jim Jacobs has
produced a film called "Knockout"
which has 50 minutes of the great
fights of boxing history. One of
the bouts shown is the 1922 Leon-
ard-Tendler match. Jacobs has
been a fight-film collector since
he was 14 ... Bernie Glickman of
Chicago is the manager of heavy-
weight Ernie Terell.
Bernard F. Gimbel will receive
the People-to-People Sports Com-
mittee award at a dinner in New
York on Dec. 13 ... A new book
just published about one of the
most famous race horses in his-
tory, Phar Lap, says that the Aus-
tralian horse was owned by ". . .

years, a leader in many other Jew-
ish causes, was elected to Parlia-
ment in a byelection in Bond i.
He had been endorsed for his
candidacy by the Labor Party.

BERLIN — Swastika painters
again struck here Wednesday, also
smearing the words "Heil Hitler"
and anti-Semitic slogans on down-
town doors and walls.
Two similar incidents occurred
this week. Police have offered a
reward of $1,250 for the vandals,
who also chalked jeers at the
police.

Marcel Proust Letters

WALTHAM, Mass.—A major ac-
quisition_ of unpublished Marcel
Proust letters has been made at
Brandeis University.
The 23 letters, 22 of them un-
published, shed light on the French
novelist's stormy relationship with
Bernard Grasset, the initial pub-
lisher of his major work, "A la
Recherche du Temps Perdu (Re-
membrance of Things Past)."
