Oistrakh Plays
Three Sonatas
on Dover Record

For nearly an hour, the Dover
Publications recording of David
Oistrakh's music enchants those
who are fortunate to bring his
violin into their
homes on this
magnificent rec-
ord.
Three sonatas
appear on this
Dover produc-
tion. Commenc-
ing with Tartini's
Sonata in G
Minor ("Devil's
Trill"), to the
brilliant accom-
paniment of Vla-
dimir Yampolsky,
the great artist
then offers Bee-
thoven's Sonata
No. 5 in F Major
a n d Schubert's
Sonata in A Ma- Oistrakh
jor. Lev Oborin is - the accompan-
ist for the latter two sonatas.
Acclaimed as Russia's great-
est violinist - some say he is
the world's top master in his
field - Oistrakh proves his skill
with his three renditions on this
record. To call it a gem is to
underrate a great production by
a genius.
Flawless in his interpretation of
the three sonatas - the first is a
very old one, Giuseppe Tartini
(1692-1770) having composed his
200 years ago - Oistrakh creates
tones that inspire listening to him
endlessly. That's what helps make
the Dover record so great: it will
never tire the listener.

New Jerry Lewis Comedy
Jerry Lewis shoots for the moon
-and makes it-in a new "way-
out" comedy at 20th Century Fox,
titled "Way, Way Out," in which
he will portray a weather astro-
naut stationed in space. Richard
D. Zanuck has set a Jan. 10 start-
ing date for the comedy, to be
filmed partly at the Space Flight
Center in Houston and at Cape
Kennedy. Gordon Douglas (of
"Harlow") will direct the zany
spoof, written by William Bower
and Laslo Vadnay, in which Jerry
is blasted off to the moon with
a lady astronaut to meet a Russia
couple at the lunar satellite. The
star will report to Fox upon com-
pletion of his own production of
"Three on a Couch" at Columbia.

Gets Lifetime Contract
Robert Arthur was handed a
lifetime contract as a Universal
producer. His latest assignment,
"A Man Could Get Killed" starring
Melina Mercouri and Tony Fran-
ciosa, marked his 50th picture
during his career of 20 year s.
Instrumental in launching the ca-
reers of writers-directors Blake
Edwards and Stanley Shapiro, he
also produced six of Universal's
Tony Curtis films.

producer of "The Countess," with
Charlie's son Sydney, most re-
cently on Broadway with Barbra
Streisand in "Funny Girl," co-star-
ring under Papa Chaplin's direc-
tion. Charles also will compose the
music for "The Countess Countess;"
he did so for all of his sound
films, including his last Holly-
wood production of "Limelight,"
whose score was most notable.
Joseph E. Levine these days
can be seen everywhere. He has
been in London and Rome for
conferences on "Will Adams,"
-the Dalton Trumbo epic starring
Peter O'Toole, to be filmed on
location in Japan next year; and
to advance his co-production
deals with Italy's Carlo Ponti
and magnetic star Marcello Mast-
roianni.
Back in Hollywood, Levine-Cy
Endfield's "Sand of the Kalahari,"
photographed in the desert of
South West Africa, was previewed
to the press at Paramount. Stuart
Whitman and Theodore Bikel are
rendering performances of fright-
eningly realistic dimensions as
two of the six survivors of an air
crash, in a savage story of "sun,
sand and sex."
Levine also found time to sign
Debbie Reynolds, in private life
the wife of shoe magnate Karl, for
the starring role in "I married
a Psychiatrist," from the screen
play by Leonard Spigelglass, to

go before the cameras at Para-
mount early next year, with George
Sidney producing and directing.
Birk Douglas, who most re-
cently presented the Medallion
of Valor of the State of Israel
posthumously to the widow of
Col. Mickey Marcus, at a Bond
affair in Beverly Hills, now him-
self is the recipient of the 1965
Citation Medal for distinguished
achievement in the field of
human relations bestowed upon
the star of "Cast a Giant
Shadow" by the Hebrew Uni-
versity of Jerusalem.
Hal Wallis is preparing a mo-
tion picture production of "Bare-
foot in the Park," the Broadway
comedy by Neil Simon, with the
author writing his own screen play.
Wallis recently completed on loca-
tion filming of "Paradise, Hawaii-
an Style," starring Elvis Presley.

to Steal a Million and Live
appier Ever After," will be

caise, programed as "Homage to
William Wyler."

burn, the master's own screen dis-
covery from "Roman Holiday."

lous and wasting, all knife and
root-puller, but guiding, instruc-
tive, inspiring, a south wind, not
an east wind." - Ralph Waldo
Emerson.
