Four Jet Flights to Florida Added by Delta Here

Delta Air Lines' winter sched-
ules from Detroit to Florida have
been increased by four jet flights
in expectation of a 30 per cent
gain in passengers.

Richard T. Brodhead, Detroit
district sales manager, said all-jet
service will provide nine four-
engine flights daily from Metro-
politan Airport, more jets to
Florida than any other airline—
for a total of 1,012 seats. Eight
flights are effective Dec. 15; the
ninth Feb. 6.
New this year are a morning
one stop DC-8 jet to Tampa; a
morning DC-8 Banner non-stop to
Miami; an afternoon Covair 880
non-stop to Miami; and a late
afternoon DC-8 to Miami, operating
non-stop to Tampa.
A total of seven flights, includ-
ing the non-stops, serve Miami.

Winter after Winter after Winter!

It might generally be stated
that while rationalists among Jew-
ish thinkers tend to reject the doc-
trine of "transmigration," mystics
and Kabbalists have accepted it
during certain periods in Jewish'
history. Transmigration, the belief
that the soul after death follows
a process whereby it enters another
animate body, either man or ani-
mal, and lives again in that par-
ticular body, is known in general
world literature as far back as the
Greek Pythagoras. Some have
traced it back to the Egyptians.
Rav Saadia Gaon in his "Book
of Beliefs and Opinions" rejects
this doctrine. Hasdai Crescas and
Joseph Aibo follow his theory in
rejecting this theory on philoso-
phical grounds. On the other hand,
Rabbi Judah Ben Asher attempts
to develop a philosophical basis
in favor of this theory. Isaac Abar-
banel likewise attempted to estab-
lish a philosophical basis for this
theory, seeeing this theory as the
background for the Bible's law on
Levirate marriages through which
the name of a deceased brother
would be reestablished by the mar-
riage between his widow and his
living brother, which would pro-
duce a child bearing his name.
The theory which seems to have
found its first formal appearance
in Jewish literature in the eighth
century reached its height during
the post medieval period of the
Lurianic Kabbalah. Its most popu-
larly known application is the case
of the "Dibbuk" as well as the
case of the "Golem" of the Maharal
of Prague. There are some who be-
lieve that this doctrine, like some
other beliefs in the life of the
hereafter, was an attempt to justify
the seeming paradox of both the
suffering of the righteous and
peace of the wicked. Thus the soul
of the righteous could rid itself
of some blemish it had acquired
during its lifetime by being re-
implanted into another animate
object after death.
What should be made clear is
that such beliefs, even among those
who strongly adhered to them, were
never accorded the rank of absolute
dogma in the Jewish tradition.
What is basic, as far as Judaism
is concerned, is the belief in the
immortality of the soul and its
resurrection. What farm this im-
mortality, or life after death,
assumes is a matter which is sub-
ject to interpretation and specula-
tion. It is the feeling of responsi-
bility which the rabbis stressed so
that a man comes to understand
that his deeds on this earth are
subject to reward and punishment
of some sort even after death, while
at the same time there is a means
of attaining salvation and forgive-
ness even after death.
