Israel Establishes Virgin Islands Link Through the Captain of S.S. Shalom Special to The Jewish Jews ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands—Israel's emissaries are becoming the links between many Jewish communities and the Virgin Islands. The new contacts are resulting from the cruises that have become a routine part of the functions of the Zim Lines, the Israel navigation company. It is in the course of cruises made by Zim Lines' T.S.S. Shalom, the company's largest vessel, that the Shalom's popular master, Captain W. A. Freudenberg, has established the link with the St. Thomas community and its synagogue, Bracha v'ShAlom. Thus, there also is a kinship in names of the house of worship, one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere, and Israel's symbolic nautical representa- tive. On one such tour, the governor of the Virgin Islands, Ralph M. Paiewonsky, linked America with Israel when he created a friendship indicated in this photo which Paiewonsky (extreme right) was host to Captain Freudenberg and two members of the U.S. Cabinet, Secre- tary of Interior Stewart L. Udall (second from left) and Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman. A remarkable story attests to the career of Captain Werner Avner Freudenberg whose activities have drawn worldwide attention. The 53-year-old captain of the Shalom has been at sea for 31 years. He commenced his seafaring as a deck boy with the Red Star Line operated by Arnold Bern- stein, whose shipping industry was confiscated by the Nazis. After serving on German ships, he left for Israel in 1939 and for an entire year worked in a kibbutz. He relates with pride that he began his Israeli activities as a camel driver, delivering sand for building purposes from the Tel Aviv seashore to Jewish in- dustries in what was then Pales- tine as one of a group of camel riders. His experiences in navigation on German merchant marine vessels served him in good stead when he U.S. Orthodox Meet Asks Federation School Aid GREENFIELD P A R K, N. Yy (JTA) — Jewish Federations throughout the country were asked Monday to grant financial support to yeshivot, in a resolution adopted at the closing session of the three- day national convention of Agudath Israel of America. The 1,000 delegates also adopted a series of resolutions aiming at inspiring a deeper sense of com- mitment to religious Judaism among the Jewish masses, and in- stilling among Orthodox Jews an aroused awareness of the neces- sity of taking an independent Orthodox position on Jewish events "without bowing to the whims of a dominating secular Jewish leader- ship." Rabbi Shlomo Lorincz, a mem- ber of Israel's parliament, who flew directly to the conclave in order to report on the recent elections in Israel, declared that "without a basic change in the government's policies on reli- gious issues," he sees no likeli- hood of Agudath Israel joining the new coalition cabinet that will be formed. The convention elected a five- man presidium, consisting of Rab- bis Moshe Feinstein, Mordechai S. Friedman, Benjamin W. Hendeles, Moshe Horowitz and Chaskel Bes- ser. Michael G. Tress was reelected administrative president, and Rab- bi Morris Sherer executive vice president. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 10—Friday, November 19, 1965 continued his marine activities in Palestine. He was taken by the British to Liverpool where he passed his examinations for second and chief officer's roles. He served during the war on ships that car- ried ammunition. In 1941 he was one of the crew on a ship that was torpedoed and sunk off the Eastern Mediter- ranean and he and the rest of the crew rowed their way to safety after two harrowing days on a small boat. During the Israel War of Independence, Captain Freuden- berg participated in the smug- gling of arms to Israel. He was either commanding these boats or testing new ships. He had his captain's license when he went to work for the Zim Lines in 1949. Since then he has captained the S. S. Jerusalem, and has been the Shalom's captain since its launch- ing. Now, on the Shalom, he is revered as an able ship's master as well as a fine host who makes the many hundreds of touring pas- sengers feel at home on the high seas. Captain Freudenberg has his home in Haifa where his wife now lives and whither he returns fre- quently between tours. They have a married daughter who lives in a kibbutz and who three months ago presented the Freudenbergs with their first grandchild. An- other daughter has just completed her army services and is studying physiotherapy in an Israeli hos- pital, Asaf Harofe, near Tel Aviv. Recalling that the S. S. Jeru- salem which he previously cap- tained is much smaller than the Shalom — it is a 10,000-ton vessel, compared with the 25,000- ton Shalom — Freudenberg speaks with pride about his pres- ent vessel's modernity. He had helped guide its construction and he views it as "a floating hotel, noiseless, air-conditioned, perfectly stable." "We have well earned the praise of the Atlantic Shipyards in Saint Nazaire, where the Shalom was b u i 1 t," Freudenberg said "The ship's great novelty is its stabilizers system — the most powerful ever built by the British Denny Brown Company." With a crew of more than 500— accommodating 650 additional pas- sengers — the S. S. Shalom's per- sonnel is mostly Israeli, but even the Italians and occasional Chinese in its force speak Hebrew. The Shalom's programs are unique. There isn't a dull moment on any day's voyage. And there is emphasis on Israeli themes and on Hebrew. While all crew members speak English, Hebrew is the liner's, official tongue. Freudenber g pointed out that until the emerg- ence of Israel, Hebrew has not been seamen's language since King Solomon sent his fleets to fabled Ophir. Every officer, steward and sea- man aboard the Shalom has his official rank or title which appears in Hebrew in the Ship's Articles.
